Is the Mercruiser 470 a good outdrive or should I walk away? Price is resonable and it has a trailer. I vaguely remember hearing something was weak with this but no real detail. thanks

Re: Mercruiser 470

the drive is dandy, a ahlpha1, it's the engine that is troublesome from what i read...
research 470 here on iboats using the search function.... you'll get lots of hits...
after reading, then walk away...

Re: Mercruiser 470

Run is a good decision - there are lots of boats out there right now, no reason to CHOOSE a mercenstein 470 or an OMC.

I have a 86 470 170 horse power and it dose not miss a beat. We took the boat 400 miles on the Mississippi in 4 days. It hold 150 pounds of compression even across the cyl. and runs strong all day long. Like every engine there's good ones and bad ones... Just my opinion

Ayuh,.... And you should feel Lucky....

The day will come when you'll be repowering, or junking the hull...

Even Good motors need Parts occasionally....

There are still a few Monzas running around on the road, but I wouldn't recomend one to someone looking for a "new" car.

Re: Mercruiser 470

depends on how you look at it. Just what is the good price? I know the crankshafts alone for those engines can cost a fortune, if its really cheap buy it, disassemble it and sell the parts, there are always people hunting for parts for that engine, because they are difficult to impossible to find.

Just a thought..

Re: Mercruiser 470

if its cheep just run it till i dies.
Which may be a while if you take care of it.
I like mine its light, powerful and good on gas 4 gph cruise. They just don't stand up well with abuse and neglect.

Heres the straight dope.

Take the motor and tie a rope around it and you will have a great anchor.

Don't sink a dime into it.

There may be some who will tell you that they got no problems with the motor, now !

But when they do they will change the tune real, real quick.

No parts, no support, and no one willing to work on it.

It was of bad design from day one.

If you want a 3.7, 470, 170, 488, 165 whatever you want to call it, come to NJ they are giving them away.

But no one wants them.

I saw 5 boats on the side of the road with grass growing in the floor of the boat no kidding.

One had a tree growing right thru the trailer and hull no kidding.

All had the 470 in them.

So there you have it.

It's up to you, you got the real information, no self interest cause i don't have one.

If you got one get rid of it.

If your thinking of fixing one in a boat DON'T.

And if your thinking of buying a boat with one in it DON'T.

And if someone tells you they got one and never had a problem with it DON'T believe them.

If it is a 165hp 4 cylinder DON'T buy it, or try to fix it.

If someone wants to give it to you, DON'T TAKE IT.

I hope i made myself perfectly clear.

Any other questions about the motor, please ask.

Re: Mercruiser 470

This is my first post and I just sign up to say a few things about the 470.
I have a 470 in a Wellcraft V-20 and love it. I bought the boat because it had a 4 cylinder engine, did not want v-8 for fishing all day for the price of gas. Did the tune up, change the water pump gasket and it runs like a charm.
I run 30 miles out into Lake Superior in the morning, troll all day, run back 30 miles and burn about 15 to 20 gallons of fuel. That motor runs 10hrs non stop.
I did this at least 15 times this sumer and that motor did not even cough once. Many other trips to camp with the family and dogs 30 miles form home.
I find it to be a great motor, not worried to go anywhere. So I find that the people crashing on them probably abused them, did not do the maintance on them or are just not that handy. When I first got the boat cylinder 4 was 50lbs less than the rest, it ended up the rings were lined up, easy fix and changed the main bearings at the same time. So dont be worried about the 470, it sounds like no other motor has any problems around here.
