I had a thread started about my merc making a funny noise and i have went through and pulled the outdrive but im stuck at how i get the shift cable bellow off. every one in my old thread said search on here but i cant find anything on the shift cable and how to remove and replace. Looking at the bell housing where the shift cable hooks up to the aluminum piece to shift it there is a wire through threads and then a nut. if i take all of that good stuff off and i replace the bellow that way or do i have to remove the whole shift cable. My cable is good and is not giving me any problems so i want this to be as easy as possiable with out taking a bunch of stuff off. also when im reinstalling my outdrive and bell housing can any one give me the torq specs of the hinge pins and the bolts that hold the outdrive on. i guess any of the torq specs i need would be great

Ayuh,... Soon after you put it back together from replacing the shift cable bellows,...
The shift cable, 'n the rest of the bellows will be junk too...
They All tend to need replacing at the Same time...

You can do as ya please, but I don't go that deep, without changing ALL of the rubber parts, 'n the shift cable...

I'm replacing the bellow only not the cable. the cable is fine works fine has never given me problems. i just need to know if i can remove the wire and the nut that holds the aluminum piece on the cable that goes into the lower unit or do i have to remove the whole entire cable from the engine and pull it out. i just need to get the bell housing off and i dont want to have to pull the entire cable out when im not replacing it just getting to the bellows and gimbal bearing

Here is a link to download the OEM service manual for the Gen II drive.
http://www.4shared.com/document/dPQUcyn_/Service_Manual_14.html

Section 4A covers replacing all the bellows, you just need to pick out the parts needed to change just the shift cable bellows.
Remove the cable, then change the bellows and re install the cable. You will not need to remove the bellhousing or the other bellows.
You will have to readjust the shift cable as in section 2 of the manual.

I am replacing the gimbal bearing as well as the bellows and water pump hose and water pump and all that stuff while i am in there but i am out of money right now and being the shift cable is working just fine i see no need to replace it. i also live by the rule "if its not broke dont fix it". yes i understand while i am in there replace it but i just dont see the need to when it is working just fine

That is the WORST possible maintenance method you could possibly use when working on the drive and transom shield. It is also the most expensive.

I take care of my stuff and i do all my own maintance this is a new boat to me this is why i am doing all of this. thats fine if you think i should replace the cable when i think its fine and i dont need to. thats your opinion and this is mine. Alls i want to know is can i remove the wire and the nut holding the aluminum shifter piece on the cable and then remove the 9/16 deep bolt to get the bell housing off or do i have to remove the entire cable from the boat
