I've got a 77 Starcraft Holiday i/o with a Mercruiser 140 that I'd like to get the engine pulled along with the leg and get it all ok'd so to speak. I'll also be doing the transom at the same time.

I'm looking online to order some transom installation kits and any other parts that I can do at the same time. It would probably save me money to do my own ordering.

Mercruiser 140 inboard (serial number 4651783) and Mercruiser leg (serial number 4683667)

Just wondering the exact leg type as most web sites confuse the hell out of the issue.

Here's a webpage I've been using to help identify the leg... http://www.sterndrive.info/sterndriveparts/identify_my_outdrive.html

I was also wondering what are the best companies to buy from. Is Sierra comparable to genuine Mercuiser parts? I'd prefer to buy the best as I'd like to do this as few times as possible :)

Here's a pic of the leg.

Here's the website I've been using try pics the parts. http://www.sterndrives.com/transomsealkits.html

On the page you linked - the first two kits fit your setup. The difference between the two is the exhaust bellows - one is a bellows, and one is a tube. They both work - the tube is easier to install.

You might want to consider replacing the shift cable while you are at it. If you do, be sure to look and see whether you currently have a cable which screws in from the front of the bell housing - or is it from the back, or aft. The newer style cables will work, but they screw in from the aft - you will need to tap out the hole with a special tap if it hasn't already been changed.

Would it be a considered pre alpha 1? Everything I see calls it a 120/140 leg but it looks like there is some mix and match as certain parts fit certain families of drives.

Also just wondering what other parts to do like bell housing gaskets, water pump, impeller, trim switches, etc.

I don't worry too much about the names - you have the serial numbers. Anything specific you can look up by the serial number range.

Serial number says it's a I-drive. Look at service manual #1 in the Adults Only thread at the top of the page. Takes about 3 hours to download...but it's free...

What do you dudes think about the whole original Mercruiser vs Sierra, etc.

So far shift cable, gaskets, transom kit, bellows kit, trim switches. What else can you think of.

I would buy the OEM bellows kit. Trim senders; I chose not to replace because I've had my boat for 25 years and don't feel like I need the info any more. I know where it planes and when it's up & out. The Sierra's are fine though. The rest of the stuff...Sierra is fine. Good to ask though, Sierra is fine for just about everything...but it never hurts to ask.

Re: Mercruiser leg identfication

Here's the parts I'm looking at buying. I'm looking at buying from this site as they are original Mercruiser parts and they ship USPS to Canada

http://inetmarine.com/index.asp?Page...D&ProdID=35157

It's the 710-30-803098T 1 TRANSOM SEAL REPAIR KIT original Mercruiser and the shift lever kit that corrects a seal problem with the shift cable.

http://inetmarine.com/index.asp?Page...arch=GO&Page=1

Now I just have to find for the shift cable part number on this site and a water pump rebuild kit with everything new.

Just double checking to make sure I'm on the right track with part numbers, etc before I place my order. Let me know anything else you can think of as I'm having the leg and engine pulled.

I'll do the trim limit and send switches done even though I can eyeball when I'm planing correctly but since the wires go through the transom I'll do them at the same time as well.

Does anyone have a line on the transom bolts and any else I'm missing. Also wondering if I should do the oil pump as it's in the pan. Let me know if I "m starting to sound crazy :)

Re: Mercruiser leg identfication

looks like your on the right track to me.

do continue to get oem parts. you'll likely be happier as the parts will work right. especially the shift cable. from reading here on iboats for a few years, i understand the oem ones are much better.

i think ya need s/m #2 for a 77, confirm by s/n. i think ya have a mc-1 drive. the sequence of progression was mc-1, r (revised), mr (major revised) and then apha1. these are all pretty much the same drives and many parts are interchangeable. though not all.

the trim switches were different on the newer versions. i think you'll find ya have the trim limit switch mounted on the gimble ring, in the center. activated by the bellhousing when triming up. that switch is nla i think. mines broke too so i just use care when trimming up....

sounds like yer really gonna get her fixed up good. have fun.

Here's the swack of parts I ordered. This list should keep me busy for a while. I'm ordering all the hoses, gaskets, etc I can think of as mine look kinda rough. I'm going to stick to Mercury/Quicksilver and went with Georgia Watersports as they can ship USPS to me for cheap.

I still need to lookup the parts for the impeller, etc in the leg. I've got the supplier confirming my order based on serial numbers.
