Hi,

I started the 4.3 and the exhaust is not coming out of the prop, is that normal? I can hear it coming from the transom area. it sounds good but I don't think this is normal. Of course I always submerge my drive into the water before running the engine.

Thanks,

Arthur.

With the boat in the water, you can't really tell where it's coming from. By noise atleast. You get bubbles that rise up the transom and some at aft end of the drive.
On muffs, you get a better idea. The noise is at the transom where there are exhaust relief ports, with water running past the hub in the prop along with exhaust from the engine.

I had the drive in a tun of water so the transom assembly was not in the water and the noise was coming from there. there was nothing coming out of the end of the drive. I have never had a mercruiser before.

The exshaust is not coming out of the prop, is that normal??????

What I am asking is where does the exshaust and not water exit from?

So far the engine isn't running long enough to get hot. I think I have a dirty carb. the boat sat for three years.

The exhaust and water exit the same places. Next to the transom, there are 2 idle relief ports. At idle, you will usually get most of the water and exhaust out of those ports.

Just Curious.... I assume you meant "tub" of water? Where are your muffs? I've never run in a tub of water.

OK, now you're questioning my motives. I got used to using a tub because I started out owning outboards and I used to put them into an trash can full of water. I only use the muffs when I do a cleanout at the launch ramp, not when working on the the boat. Where are your muffs? My old boat shop had a concrete pool with a ramp on one end where the boats were backed in and they would be run floated.

Yeah, I meant tub. Do you want to help? or do you want to be critical? Are you part of the problem or part of the solution? Why do I feel so unwelcome? Oh, I see, you title says "Petty"

A little sensitive OP, don't you think? (Hate to see what would happen if someone mentioned that it's "Mercruiser" :) . See Don's answer...

Yes...I want to help. No...Not being critical, just curious, because I have never run my O/D in a tub of water. I have always used my muffs to run on dry land for tests and maintenance runs before heading to the lake. Just was asking because I have heard people talk about trying to run their drives in tubs without having enough water to supply the impeller, and this causes more problems. Please dont take offense (I'm offering appology now). I guess I need to be more careful at how I phrase my curiosity. (BTW, a few more posts and you will be a "petty" too! Just happens that way.....;) I'm also still learning, too... I have recently read that some people prefer to use a full tub of water in lieu of muffs, as long as you keep a source of water going to it so it stays cool. Maybe I will have to look into that!!

It could be the flexible exhaust tube that attaches to the lower unit so that exhaust comes out the prop. I just noticed mine disconnected on a boat I just bought. Mine is an alpha one mercruiser does anyone know 1. Is this critical to the performance of the boat, and2. How I reconnect this so called flexible aprprox. 3 inche hose it is not easy and am having a hard time doing so? Is there a trick? It seems that when the lower unit is trimmed down would be best but then I can't get at it to slip on...
