Just replaced the shaft seals on a 1990 Wellcraft St Tropez LXH to the new drip-less type. All went well machined my own thin easy to use 2-1/4 nut wrenches. Put them on then the old master of boats 50 yrs in the business came by and said we have just made the biggest mistake of your lives by using the drip-less seals. They are the worst and biggest failure to come out in boating. He said they are failing all over the place and everyone is going back to the original style with packings. Anyone every hear of a problem with these types of seals? I have not and now a little worried.

There all over the place and for the most part last a very long time. I have heard no catastrophic problems, but as BT mentioned nothing is totally maintenance free, all that said they are free for a long time.

will add this to the seal kit http://www.pyiinc.com/index.php?section=src a basic split collar which i will pick up from a Bearing supplier.

This is not a seal kit, it is a "if you shaft comes loose", it will keep it from falling out of the boat. This is all it does, I wouldn't bother unless you are negligent boat, and it doesn't sound like your are

Installed split collar to each shaft but found out the drip-less seals need to be pressurized from the water pump or exhaust system unless slow moving like a sail boat. Now that is new and thought as to where to attache the hose for water pressure, sea water pump or exhaust riser.
