please help i am in the uk seeking help for my outboard mercury 50hp blueband thunderbolt ignition
firstly i would like to know the age of the outboard serial no, 9233982 secondly i was told it was the stator playing up and when i took the flywheel off and stator the stator plate has a crack i will discribe the plate which the stator screwed on to by 4 screws and then there are 4 bolts i have taken the bolts out but the plate does not want to come off whether its stuck i dont know or whether the engine has to be taken apart any advise will be greatfull and thank you for looking my email address is sgf_1111@yahoo.co.uk

i believe the engine is a 1978 model 4 cylinder.

yes you are right it is a 4 cylinder i should of stated that
now i need to know about the stator bracket

still no news on my brackett that hold the stator on i have undon the 4 bolts does this lift off with force
also the number on the stator reads 0404 stamed on it with heat and no, 398-5454a21 stamped on it with white print, i am asking these questions as i have brought a boat with engine but the engine does not start and there seems to be that the engine is too cleane to be true

Mercury has a flat plate puller that fastens to the upper main brg cap which is what your trying to remove in some cases if you loosen the top 2 crankcase bolts on both sides you can tap it and get it to turn, with a couple of screws in the screw holes it will pull up as you turn it

what does a main brg cap is this the right name for it if i asked for one at a dealers, and thank you for information as i am doing this engine from no knowlage at all just so i will know the engine back to front and maybe if all goes well help others
