Hello all,
I was hoping this info would have been in a sticky so I propose if someone has the answer that this be added as a sticky.
I have a Merc 850 serial number 4539450. Depending on the source it is either a 1976 (Maxrules) or a 1975 (Marineengines). What I can not find is the serial number group.
In the parts breakdowns for the gear housings it is divided into either Serial Group 1 or Serial Group 2. The water pump housings are different part numbers. I would rather order the parts (whole kit including housings) rather then open it up and decide what I need then. I am trying to take the same approach as I do with a car if I am replacing a timing belt. If I have to take the water pump off and there is a lot of work to get to that point of disassembly I would rather spend the few extra bucks and replace it now then later.
So how do I know what my serial group is? I googled it and only found what i had already found which was that there are 2 serial groups, nothing about how to know which you have.
I was able to start the motor yesterday with very little trouble. Ran it about a minute but nothing out of the tell tale. I am going to fog it today before the Bears-Chargers game and put her to bed before the winter. I'm going to order my needed tune-up parts over the winter and do the repairs first thing this spring. She needs at the very least an impeller, all new fuel lines, at least 2 spark plug wires, a fuel pump repair kit (leaking).
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Adam
