mercury deatails from serial needed

Hi just purchased a mercury 40hp oil injected brownband, date on the starter motor is 1990 and the serial number on the engine block is 1017-8359. so could someone please help with dating this engine or let me know a website to check it thanks .

Thats not a serial # it's part of a part #.

Thankyou could you please tell me where i would find it as the manuel says on the transom bracket or on the powerhead block in the area i found this one.On my engine there is NO serial number on transom bracket.

Then brown band should make it a 85/86, how ever Merc did not build a 40 HP from 82 to 89 so thats no help. How many cyl engine is it?

it has 4 cylinders, 40 hp , oil injection says classic on the engine cover and as said it has 1990 on the starter motor if thats anything to go by im not sure here is a pic of the engine

Ok that looks like a 86/87 40 HP, Those engine had the serial number stamped on a soft plug above the port stud of the bottom carb or on the block at the crankcase seam, top port (exhaust) side
