Alan, So you think advising people to run their motors at an oil ratio (Merc never recommended 100::1) that is not recommended, with an oil that is not recommended (Amsoil was not TCW-III approved, last I heard), is proper?

Not sure I understand that logic.

Chris, really you think that's what I said? I didn't advise anyone to do anything. I said I was going to run Amsoil 100:1 mix in my gas tank while also using the oil injection to end up with a total mix of about 37:1. By the way it says on the Amsoil bottle "Recommended for TC-W3,API-TC applications". So you don't understand what I wrote and you don't understand Amsoil's oil yet you make comment on both. Where's the logic in that?

What it does not say on the Amsoil bottole is that it actually is TCW-3 approved. It just says that it is recommended for apps that are supposed to use those oils. There is a BIG difference. Amsoil is NOT TCW-3 certified.

I thought they were junk too. I was an OMC man from the get go. But, they are GONE. I still have heart for the little OMC fishing engines. They were rock solid. Merc. never competed there.

Then, we ran a 75 HP (oil injected) Merc. well over 2000 hours with NO issues whatsoever. I was a believer in Black.

We've had nothing but since. All Four Strokes. They have been FLAWLESS!

Hey now! My 6hp, 7.5Hp and 9.9hp Mercs make great finshin motors, just gotta have a back up plan when the quit?.:D

Fishing is a sport.. whether you eat them or not.

Way to make a blanket statement and ostracize yourself as usual...

Fishing is looked at different in the Northwest than it is in the South. Its definitely not a sport here and I dont really know any serious fishermen that consider it a sport. One of the guys that works for me is one of those type A guys that does everything like his life depends on it. Pro ball payer when he was young, he's got a masters degree in horticulture, gets up 3 AM every day during the season to get 4 hours of fishing in before work. Catches his limit almost every day in salmon , sturgeon and steelhead and fills the larders of dozens of less fortunate people in town. I posed the question to him today if he considers what what he does a "sport" ? I tell you. If looks could kill.. Its a means of putting meat on the table and we have limits that would make a tournaments and other "sporting events" impossible. There are bass but its not something anyone I know makes much of a point in trying to catch them. I do in the high summer and eat a few fried but I still don't consider fishing or even hunting a "sport". Different frames of mind is all. As usual.

Generational, upbringing and agreed, definitely demographics play a role wired, my Dad will keep anything with gills sometimes I think............geeesh Dad, put a few back for next time eh?

Think of the Guys/Gals that go waaaaaaaaaaaaaay up Norf to Alaska. Sure, some for sport, no doubt but, wonder what percent go for meat over sport? Most folks I know that have done the Alaska gig(or live there), I'd guess'timate WELL over half, go for meat.

I loved the Reindeer smokies BTW Santa....YUM, No red noses around here baby, just BBQ sauce and a cold brew.

And now for something completely different........

Why is it so difficult to find a reliable outboard motor. It seems that Mercury Outboards require constant adjustment, babying, TLC, in order to have even a prayer of starting. Very disconcerting and dangerous if one is counting on the dinghy to get back to the boat. My 20 year old lawnmower (Sears) works just great, will burn any kind of gas, always starts with one pull, doesn't need constant fuel filter changes, etc., etc. For two Thousand bucks plus, I have a piece of poorly designed "junk."

Then put your Sears lawn mower on the back of your boat and go fishing or out to the big boat. You bought an 8 year old motor with 3 hours on it. That means it's been sitting on a shelf deteriorating most of it's life. What you have is a $2000 poorly maintained and neglected motor. Think about it. You are unhappy with your purchase, live with it or buy another motor. It's really that simple.

Also, this is an old topic. Do not reply to topics older than 90 days unless you are the topic starter and in this case, you are not.
