quick and simple question

ive got a 1968 9.8 Twin mercury that i just got and finished repairing

ive got a mid 80s model 15 hp evinrude that i use on my 14 foot john boat this motor pushes 2 men 200+ , tackle, gear, and 2 marine batterys 23.9 mph (gps) i was very impressed with the power this motor has BUT

Ive run this 9.8 mercury in a holding tank NEVER ON A BOAT and oh my this thing screams... Just listening to her run in the tank she sounds like she is turning 2 or 3 thousand rpms higher than the 15 hp evinrude... i currently have this motor up for sale without even trying it on my boat.. am i making a mistake ?

is this really a 9.8 or is it like a 20 hp do the old motors have more power than the newer ? should i be selling this motor ?

Re: mercury VS evinrude

depending on the year, theres a good chance the Evinrude is prop rated power (OMC started rating at the prop in mid 80s) The Merc will not be prop rated in that model year. Theres no way you can judge performance by ear, you have to put it on a boat and see what you get but I dont think the Merc will outperform that Evinrude. Based upon what you said about it in your post, thats very respectable performance for a 15hp pushing a boat with that much of a load. I say stick with what you know is a proven motor.
On the other side of the coin (and I dont know this to be factual) Ive heard many times that most 9.5 / 9.9 motors actually put out more than the advertised power, perhaps as much as 2 to 3 hp more. They are just rated below 10 hp since many goverment agencies require registration for 10 hp and up.
At least thats the way it is in Ontario.
