Re: Mercury vs Hond***
Hey scorpio,
just incase you haven't made up your mind,
My momma didn't raise the smartest egg in the carton, evidence is I have 3 7.5hp Honda carcasas behind my shed. I bought 2 of them (used) The third belongs to a buddy and I voided myself of a 4th when I sold my 22 Catalina. It was a 5hp, and the worst of the bunch. Cathodic errosion claimed the cases on 2 of the 7.5s The 5 I bought from a dealer, but knew the original owner. He was meticulas about his boat and hadn't mistreated the unit. I picked it up on the premis that the pull starter needed repaired. Truth is the cast drive gear on the flywheel had disentigrated (dissimilar metals) I' guessing here, but just the same, my long dead grandpa in his grave had better structural qualities, not to mention that Honda likes you to bend over, way over when you buy parts from them...and you MUST buy parts from them
It died from an exhaust caused corroded hole on the bottom of the crankcase, when the crankcase pressure increased(engine rpm increase) it'd spew it's lubricant all over Sarasota bay until the low oil shut down would kill the engine.
I could go on, but I think you got the message, I replaced it with a 9.9 johnson 4 stroke, never had to push the boat off the bottom again, what a pleasure to own and operate. One last note, I bought a 1976 Merc 7.5 for my dinghy, it runssssss, God but that little guy runs. All I can say is, honda...bad, baaaaddddddddddd. Good luck
dan
