Re: mercury

when you rebuilt the carbs did you check to make sure the timing was set correctly when you re-installed them?

Re: mercury

I doubt that motor has a overheat shut down capability. Is it running on all cylinders? That is do all cylinders have good compression and spark?

Re: mercury

Mine was doing the same thing until I cleaned the carbs, set the float height properly, did a link and sync and new spark plugs.

You said you did the carbs and plugs, did you make sure to set the floats right and did you follow the factory procedure for the link and sync?

Re: mercury

Pick yourself up a service manual, it's all described in there. You'll also need an inductive timing light if you don't already have one. There are screws on the side of the throttle lever where you set the initial and total spark advance. It's part of the link and sync procedure, which is a set of steps to follow to make sure the carbs are synchronized with each other and the ignition timing. It's not hard to do, just follow the steps in the book. You'll need a helper to crank the starter over while you set the timing.

+1 to buying a manual. proper link and sync (timing) is a detailed procedure. not difficult, just detailed. you'll need a hard copy of the steps in front of you to do it with confidence.
