Hi all,

I recently came into possession of 1973 MFG Gypsy 15 boat with a Mercury 850 motor. The boat is in decent condition but is serious need of cosmetic updating. The finish is rough to say the least, there are some surface cracks in the seating, the cushions, which are still there, need replaced. I would like to get some advice as to what is the best way to give it a nice new coat of paint. DO I have to stick with the same general shade or can I change it? Is this something I can do myself?

The cushions I think I can replace myself if I can get them off to get some measurements. I have included a picture to give you an idea if where I am starting. The picture actually looks better than real life.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Re: MFG Gypsy 15 Refurb questions

Welcome to iboats.com! Quite a few MFG boats here. Regarding painting, you can paint it any color you like. The prep is the same as for a car. Sand, prime, sand, patch, prime, etc. The more you prep, the better it will look. Some members have painted with plain Rustolium, just thin and spray or roll & tip (do a search on roll and tip). Auto paint will work fine too. If its going to sit in the water all the time, then a marine top side paint is a good idea. Marine paints are often roll & tip. In fact, I just used a top side paint on my hard top project. Take the link in my signature to see what roll and tip finish looks like using top side paint.

The seats are simple, and if you can sew, you can make new ones very economically. Otherwise a good choise for budget seating is the Wise brand.

BTW, the picture doesn't show.

Good luck,

Mark

I have almost the identical boat. same year, but 14'. First, give it a good cleaning with bleach and comet. clean the hull first with hull cleaner then a good car wash soap. once you get all the grime out you will get a better understanding of the condition. you would be surprised how nice you can make it look with a good buffing.

I cant comment on painting it because ive never done it.

heres your boat new: http://www.fiberglassics.com/mfg/mfgb73006.jpg

its amazing that 1 extra foot of LOA and you can have 35hp more... mine is limited to 50hp.
