Snow? Gone?!

BILD0194.jpg

I don't see that happening anytime soon!

Can't wait for it to happen though. I'm looking forward to "getting the itch."

Doubt I'd make it up there Andy. I might entertain a fishing weekend up to Thousand Islands at some point once mine's done though. Used to go up there with my Dad every Memorial Day weekend when I was a kid. I've kinda missed that trip through the years.

Did you get my PM?

Hey guys,

I am getting the itch.....however, the snow and cold is still hanging around. I am thinking April/May should be ok.

I am not going to do as much as I had planned before because I may be moving to Vancouver and would have to sell the boat. I would like to still redo the floor and some other mods to tighten everything up (ie. the sagging dash, replace the crappy fake inside, re-cover the seats)

Hi
I am a newbie and am replacing the deck on my 1975 mgf too. I don't know if this was covered but I am leaning towards an all foam deck and want to know what to use for and how to put in floor supports.
Thanks,
Joe

Driven1,

It has been nice this past week, any progress?

I just gutted the entire interior of mine, just have to get the remaining pieces of the old stringers out. Some of them were like mud.

Hi,

I just got my stepdads old 14 foot tri hull over the summer and it was a real big terd. didnt run, no floor, rotten stringers, no switch wiring at all, no battery. pretty much....nothing haha. but the engine works now that ive rewired it completely and it starts and runs like a champ. the only thing is, i dont know how to remove the old stringers. my stepdad says an exacto knife wont work but i think it would. im just not willing to try. any tips?

Re: MFG Gypsy 15 Tri-Hull Restore advice needed

Great to find an old thread with info I actually need.

My daughter's boyfriend has taken on fixing up my old Gypsy 15.
My boat is a 73.

The floor was rotted pretty badly.
So far he has replaced the stringers with pressure treated 2X4 and has done the floor with 3/4 pressure treated plywood.

After reading the thread, I've been bitten by the bug to get involved with the old girl after all (I was just gonna let him have it).

My question is, would it be worthwile to do the foam fill under the floor at this point? The floor is already in.

The front floor forward of the console seems pretty solid, so I'm thinking we could just foam that area as well.

After reading the entire thread, I plan to take a close look at the transom as well.
The boat had a 72 Merc 650 on it that is possibly be repairable, but we have a 77 85HP Johnson that hopefully doesn't need much to get it running.

I have lost faith in the Merc after only getting 75 hours out of the last powerhead repair.

What is the status of the project boats?
Does anyone have any thoughts about putting this hull on a roller trailer?
I'll need a new trailer, and so far everyone is trying to sell me on a bunk trailer. I know a roller trailer for this boat will probably be a special order since it is so small, but when the boat was last operable (10 yr ago) the bunk trailer was a real PITA due to short ramps and tidal currents.....

I might be in the market for some restoration parts too....windshield, logos....

Great thread. Picking up my little slice of heaven tomorrow. It's yellow with a 96 Mariner 50hp. Solid floor and transom, but has some cosmetic issues such as a few nicks here and there.

N3UP, I think we have to keep the thread alive now.

I guess I'll have to take some pictures now.

The floor is already in, so I've missed the boat  on that.....

Picked it up today. didn't do much of a perusal b/c of other priorities.

floor sounds/feels good. The transom had a sharp tap also. I would like to check the foam though. The boat feels light, so I am hoping it's dry.

The biggest fixes from my quick insp. are: the low wooden gunwales need addressed, wood under the dash, a few dings topside and two on the driver bow, and little things like that.

How easy was your floor work N3UP? Hope well.

I would encourage all of you to start your own restoration threads instead of tagging on to this old one.

It's ok ezmobee. I don't mind if they tag onto this one just as long as it's on topic. And I should explain my shameful absence from the thread.

The last year and a half or so hasn't been very conducive to getting anything done around here and I think things are finally getting back under control. There were personal issues concerning my day job (working 7 days a week straight) and other family issues that took precedence over my project boats. I also unexpectedly ended up with two other "restoration" projects that I hadn't really expected at all (considering my wife talked me into the 1st one!) The second was a deal I just couldn't pass up.

To see what I'd been up to you can check it out here. http://www.championfleetowners.org/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=39&topic=1865.0

There's a pic further down the page that shows both projects with the one on the left being the one my wife picked. That one's been out and about already.

As far as the MFG goes, it's right where I left off. I have all of the stringers and transom made. Next will be glassing them in, installing a new deck, re-glassing the aft section of the cap back together and hopefully have it in the water by late summer or early fall. After things warm up and dry up around here, I'll be getting back at it and will continue to provide pics and info as I go along (and of course, seek assistance from many of the talented folks here when necessary)..

So no, I haven't abandoned the thing. Nor have I forgotten about iboats, it's great following, or this thread. Life's just sucked for a bit. Looking forward to getting it done, hooking it up to the other project, and taking them both out on their maiden voyages this year.

Now I gotta go see how Oops made out on his hull extension!

Re: MFG Gypsy 15 Tri-Hull Restore advice needed

Holy crap! I can't believe it's really been this long! Wow! I kinda feel bad about it too 'cause I know there were others waiting with baited breath to see the final outcome. As it stands, the boat is exactly where it was build-wise when I was no longer able to work on it. I am determined to get it finished up this summer if at all possible. This has gone on long enough!

So, I did do some work on it today. I'll try to get some pics up tomorrow of where I'm at. I made up some new stringers today and checked the fit of the transom, stringers, braces, and front seating area, to be sure everything was going to go back together as it should. Had a couple of things to tweak, but all in all, I think things are ready to be glassed back together.

There is one thing that happened over time that I wasn't expecting. The hull seems to have lost a bit of shape in the aft section without the support of the cap back there. It has bowed out a bit. I may have to make some temporary supports to pull it back in so I can get the aft section of the cap that I cut out back in place where it should be. Currently it won't fit right to line things back up for glassing.

So, it's not a dead thread, just a veeeeeeery slow project. There's a lot of great info in this thread and I hope it stays available for a long time to come.
