I'm looking at a donor boat for a motor, and found a 1986 Bayliner... I kind of like the looks of the boat, but remember being told the Bayliners are not such a well built boat.

Reason I'm asking, I might postpone my Power Boat rebuild for another day and go with this one...for now
Are the Bayliner boats that bad?

Thanks...

Ok now to try and give you an answer. I don't know how to post a thread so do a search on "Bayliner Quality in the 1980's". It may help.

lol no biggy.... the short answer is YES they tend to rot out if exposed to weather but NO there isn't any reason you can't get a lot of use out of it before parting it out IF it is still solid

They don't rot any faster or slower than any other type boat of that era.
We also have a Bayliner forum here at iboats. Might want to ask other BL owners. http://forums.iboats.com/Bayliner_Boats

I think the reason bayliner gets a bad rap is that there are a ton of them out there and they are very affordable. Someone might have some extra cash to buy one but may not want to spend money to take care of it. I am not saying they are the best built boat but I have seen older models that have held up just fine with proper care.

Makes sense...

That's the one thing I have never understood, regular maintenance, and the lack of!
I maintain all of my stuff, and usually lasts so long that I get rid of it just because I'm tired of it.

It's not hard to maintain stuff, but so many people out there don't... They just run stuff into the ground...

OK, I'm done with my rant!!!

Re: Mid 1980's Bayliner poll!!!

Make no mistake, Bayliner is an entry-level boat, and they will use cheaper materials and generally pay less attention to detail regarding craftmanship. That being said, the size of the boat make a bit of difference, as the Bayliners in the 24'+ range were built a little better than their 18' runabouts. As with anything over 20 years old, the way it was maintained is going to be the biggest factor in how it withstood the years. You couldn't give me a 90's Bayliner runabout, but their cruisers don't carry quite as much negative stigma.

I had an 87 Bayliner that I bought nearly new and took very good care of it.

I would not buy another one of that era.

Well I gotta chime in here..(yes still lurk here, not much I can add, as many here know more than me). Also Don, on my knees thanking you for the free info on the 1977 Bayliner, Saratoga, 350/Volvo 280. It was my first big I/O, off a neighbor, well maintained too, as I did later. ALL new "pumps/carb, ALT, full exhaust..etc. And did what you suggested too, one time when I had water intrusion, the L/U. Told me prop seals, and the "diagram" to get that oil pump slinger off, or the shift shaft seals maybe. Well, I did a "pressure test", and sure as "the not thought!"? That damn paper gasket, the "Fill", under the cover? Tore putting in, last new oil, and as the plug under the water line, sitting the slip? Ya know what I mean.

Also been a few years you, in Ocean Shores, retired out AK. I'm still outside Olympia, rural water front..(Steamboat Island). Is life treating ya right here? I hope so...(and when Don S speaks, shut up and listen...trust me.........). And while I aint posted here in a while, theres so many here, over the years, (yep, still miss "Spinner, TD"..more), but the ones older and wiser, who have gave me free knowledge, well..."Thank You". Ya all have a great Christmas/New year..and to JB?...."keep knocking them down ya old fart"!..and thanks to you, for the "wisdom" :D

Anyway, back to the smaller Bayliners. Wanna buy one, less engine, use yers? I have a 1988/Force 125, Cuddy Capri. BEFORE you do ANYTHING, "measure that Transom "..ANY them old Bayliner's, as have steep "V" hulls, and most used a old Force, 25 inch shaft, NOT, a normal L/S 20 inch. Hope this helps ya here..(oh yeah, don't think I aint "doing nothing here either)! Last 2 years was a 15.6 Flatty build boat, DR "Frankenmerc"..(lives 20 miles from me) did me a crank up rebuild tall, "Stack", for it too. I might be old at 62, but, "still a kid at heart..."live for FAST ACCELERATION!" Ya all be well....SCAATY...(Robby) Pic my new "Beast"........flat pic.jpgS5302174.JPGS5303937.jpg

Re: Mid 1980's Bayliner poll!!!

I own two bayliners, a 2003 245 and a 1989 20ft cuddy that i take fishing and they have been good for me but i do maintain them. the only thing bayliner did wrong in eighties in my opinion was make bad engine choices i think. 25" transoms can make getting a good used motor difficult depending on where you live, they are not common in my area and those force things they bolted on in place of an outboard were not good.

Doing fine, starting to feel "age", but still into fast little boats! Sold the big Bayliner, still have the 20 footer, and running just fine, after 23 years! All it takes is a little TLC.;)

Re: Mid 1980's Bayliner poll!!!

Quality apparently took a nosedive at Bayliner in '87, so an '86 should have started out life better than the notorious ones. But an awful lot (emphasis on the "awful") can happen to any boat in 25 years.

Gonna have to agree with nybo, they changed to Oh My Cod in '87, AQ Penta is the shiznet if your are buying a twenty year old plus boat.
