Re: "Milkshake" oil/water coming up through valve cover vents

I went to pick up this 4.3 L Engine today and when I got there the guy told me that it was out of a 1982 monte carlo and not a 1990 S-10 like I thought. I told him I didnt think it would work but as I have been doing some reading I really dont see why it would not work. Anyone have any thoughts?? Engine mounts all the same??? Im sure the long block is the same.

Block is the same.. Cam is different and is why we all said use a truck... Buy a marine cam and lifters.. You are good to go.. Did they install it to that car? I don't think they had the 4.3l back in 82.. I am not 100% sure.. One of the GM gearheads will know for sure, but it think they was introduced in 85.. Find one around your year range.. There are tons of them out there...

Im sure the long block is the same.

over the years GM has used over 30 different variations of the 4.3 long block

thats right, over 30 variations

keep that in mind when searching for a suitable replacement

Can't be an 82 because the engine came out in 85 unless they re-powered the car. Also, some of the early years of the engine had 2 piece rear main seals so the flywheel would be different.

Are the head gaskets different from a engine from a truck compared to from a boat??? Not really sure why I would need to change them. I thought only the manifolds were really different???

Thanks,

They need to be replaced. Normal head gaskets may have material that will corrode if you are running raw water through the engine.

Both the base metal and the sealing rings for the cylinders are made from metals highly resistant to rust and corrosion, primarily bronze and stainless steel instead of the copper and steel used in auto applications.

There is a little tidbit I found online..
Change the head gaskets and freeze plugs if you use a auto engine...

I had a buddy who had a little leak on his blazer I wanta say.. So he ran straight water though it.. Toasted the water pump and rotted out the freeze plugs in no time..

That's the timing ring for that fancy PITA splitfire ignition you have

Well don't mess up that part.. NLA... It is used to tell the ignition when to fire..

Im guessing it goes on the flywheel?? and Im hoping there is some kind of mark so I will know where to set it on the new long block. I will see when I get the cover off I guess.

Re: "Milkshake" oil/water coming up through valve cover vents

Just got a manual this weekend, not really sure why I didnt have one before. There should be a dowel pin used for alignment on the timing ring. Another question I have is: Will I need an alignment tool when I go to put the engine back into the boat??? Im not really adjusting any motor mounts and wasnt planning on removing the drive but it will be a different motor, I am a little confused on this. The manual says to just turn the crankshaft or driveshaft until they mate correctly. Will this work?? Thanks.

You pretty much have to remove the drive when replacing the engine. You should get the alignment tool or you will be removing the engine eventually to replace a worn coupler.

Why does everyone not want to spring for the alignment tool? It's is cheap... 35 bucks shipped to the door..

You can poor boy it too.. Machine yourself one.. Dimensions are in a the stickys.. Has high as rod stock is these days.. 35 bucks to have it made starts to look real cheap..

Buy a alignment tool

Dont have a problem buying the tool if I need it, just wasnt sure if I really needed it. Bruce, why do you say I pretty much have to remove the drive when replacing the engine?? I thought thats what the alignment tool was for??

I was a little confused and after reading some other posts I think I understand now. The alignment tool is used with the drive off, Correct??
