Hey Everyone.
Got a question for all you Volvo/Penta Guru's. I have a 1984 Volvo Penta 4 cylinder on a Bayliner Capri. She has the internal-cooling system. Just took it into the boat shop and had the carb rebuilt, major tune up and the Exhaust Bellow replaced. She runs so much better now! That cost me enough money I want to spend at this time. And the mechanic said I have a small water leak and the O-Rings on the copper tubing will need to replaced sometime in the future. My Question is that when I'm on Plain running about 30 MPH, the leak seams to spray water all around the engine compartment. Is this a real bad thing and should I get it fixed right away? This Engine has a fresh water-cooling system. I'm going to flush it out and replace the coolant and fresh water. Do you think this water leak can cause allot more damage than I might realize? Any suggestions would be a great help. The mechanic said it’s a minor leak. Would Duck tape work? LOL Thanks, Dan

Re: Minor Water Leak

I am guessing the mechanic was speaking of the seals at the water pump housing, where the tubes connect. I would fix these seals just because it's easy. Send me an email, I'll mail you a couple of seals... free.

You may want to check the water pump itself. The seal on the backside where the impeller shaft goes into the housing was prone to fail. There are kits to rebuild the pump, but if you install a new one it's a "do it yourself" job.

Honestly, you don't need any extra water flying around in the engine compartment... You got a hard enough time with moisture/corrosion as it is.

There are lots of those seals like used on the water pumps, on other cooling tubes all over the engine. Yes, you should get them fixed before they stop you a long way from shore.

DUCT TAPE.......Your kidding......aren't you????

If you have water spraying round the engine then your asking for trouble. Water and electrics just dont mix and what may be a small bill could turn into a large bill. Are you able to isolate where the leak is coming from it may be something you can fix yourself for a few dollars. Like your Duck tape quote nice!

YA I'm going to plug up the Water Muffs and see if I can see where it might be leaking. Rabid Fish says it's not to hard if it's around the water pump. Going to go buy the Shop Manual. Will see what happens. Man This is a great place. Before I do anything I will always consult you guys!

Perhaps if "The Anita Margarita" were to go up to his joke and "EDIT" it out, it will be ok.

it is a simple subject for complex minds. but lets not forget---those motor must be winterized also. just because they run antifreeze does not mean the saleman was saying "maintence free"". copper lines are subject to freeze damage just like a swamp cooler. live and let live.
