Couldn't beat this deal. Found a 1959 Big twin with a broken tiller thing and a stripped out spark plug threads for parts as a covert operation... Otherwise in quite good condition for only $50 bucks. Thought I would make a holiday out of it since I have never taken an outboard like this all the way apart. Cracked open a few coolies as parts were being removed.
All the while driving to check it out, wondering if I should hide the 1969 40 pony selectric under the 1959 35 pony Big Twin cowl. Going for it, found a reproduction sticker kit for the '59, very good. Big twin has rope steering, very good. Big Twin has the throttle cable pointing off to the side, very good. Big Twin has new made in Germany coils and points and condensers and wires, about 70 bucks or so in brand new stuff, very good. Big Twin has more of a vintage look, very good.
Probably an ounce or so of water came out of the lower unit first, then the lube. Cracked it open, found no damage at all. Just as I say, change the lube and keep an eye on it, it will be fine..... We are both 55 years old.... ha..... keep an eye on us... ha....If I were going to run it I would change seals and that o-ring and water pump impeller. I still have to find the time for a freshen up on the mighty Ski-Twin.....as always, keeping an eye on it..... Of course I could know everything......
