Re: missing at top speed

Is it really missing or does it feel more like it's jumping gears, or almost like you hit something?

Welcome DSCOUTS,

I have a 1988 Force 125HP, maybe I can help.

Can you give us a little more info: Does it sound to you like a cylinder is rough and losing spark or that your fuel is restricted? How does it run if you slowly apply full throttle? Do you have a Tach? How many rpm's does it show at idle, and at WOT? Do you know the compression on each of the cylinders?

Kevin

KC

Re: missing at top speed

Its a 1983 125hp. Let me start over, I have had this boat for just over a year. I haven't had any problems until a week ago. I was at a local lake for 14 days with no problem and on the 15 day it was hard to crank. After i got it to crank put in gear and it shut down. I change the spark plugs and it had no problem running. That when I noticed it would not reach top speed. No problem slowly appling the throttle. I do not have a tach.

I have a '88 Force 125HP on a 19.5' Bayliner Capri.

When it happens again, try squeezing the priming bulb while in full throttle, if this helps it’s a fuel related problem.

If you still have the original fuel pump diaphragm on your motor, it's probably a good time to replace it.

Mine recently started to hesitating and cutting out at WOT. I cleaned the carb's with Sea Foam Deep Creep spray ($4.99), pulled the plugs and sprayed liberally into each cylinder and let it sit over night. Started the next morning and ran it until it stopped smoking like h..l.

Then disconnected the battery and replaced the fuel pump Diaphragm and Gasket ($4.70), which took about five minutes. The original Diaphragm had stretched out and was not delivering the fuel at higher RPM's. Runs Great again and it was Very simple.

The Diaphragm is inside the Fuel Pump which is located behind the fuel filter.

I idle at 800 to 1000 RPM's, and get 5000 RPM's WOT. Runs about 41 to 42 MPH with a 17 pitch prop, a 1/2 tank of gas and just me in the boat.

Get yourself a Manual and a Teleflex Tach(20pole) it's relatively inexpensive and easy to install. a Tach is a must if you want to do it right.

Regards, KC

Re: missing at top speed

Have you checked the timing to see that it's not too far advanced?

I haven't got that far yet. I'm going to check out the fuel out today.

I've got a dumb question. When you pump up the ball on the on the fuel line is suppose to stay hard all of the time? This one does not even if you stay back there and pump it while your moving. Please help.

Re: missing at top speed

Pumping the primer bulb didn't help. It does take 10 to 15 min. of hard running before it starts missing.

That sounds suspiciously like an electronic problem. Like maybe something is getting heated up and not working as it should. I bet you're losing a spark. I would check the electrical side of things.

Re: missing at top speed

It's going to be a tough one to troubleshoot, because the problem only happens at WOT and after 15mins or so. It's not like you can put some muffs on it and check things out.
I would start with changing the basics. Check your fuses, and maybe try changing any engine/ignition type fuses even if they don't look blown. Get a new plug wire set and change those. I see you already changed the plugs. Next I would consider changing the coil or coils. Beyond that is beyond me!
