Re: Mixed-race family

I have been following this thread since it started and I gotta agree with Nos4r2 on this one. Have tried to keep emotion out of it, and you are all saying basically the same thing, but your own experiences cloud what the other is saying. I have not heard anyone say it was good to don a white hood and go hang people, or hold back someone from an opportunity because of color. Only that for some, because of experiences, the first impression will be a bit colored, but there will be a chance for the inner person to shine (if the inner person does shine).

Why is it that many here on this board are quick to say that Homeland Security and Airport screeners should be able to stereotype someone of Middle Eastern decent, but they cannot because skin color is black, white, yellow, or orange? Do you see the double standard?

We all have double standards, and yes, Techno, we all think of ourselves as more important than we should.

This has been a good and civil dialogue. I suggest the major players take a break from it, take a deep breath, and go back and re-read it. You might be a bit enlightened.

Re: Mixed-race family

I agree aspeck and almost finished my last post with an "I'm done". The reason I didn't was that we were being reasonably civil . . .

Tough topic, although where we ended up was never my intention with the original thread posting. Over and out . . .

Kevin, all participants have been very civil to each other. I wasn't trying to be a wet blanket and stop the debate, just suggesting a breath be taken. Each and every one of you that have contributed have made valid points, some I do not agree with, others that I do. But all have been valid. And I can say that I agree with at least part of what everyone here has posted.

Thanks for a civil discussion.

For the record, I was not saying that Ray thinks of himself more important that he should - it is all of us that are guilty of that. I have come to appreciate Ray for what he brings to this forum. Sometimes I leave scratching my head, but I appreciate his contributions none-the-less.

This clarification is for you, technoliteralreadmoreintoitthanyoushould reader. :devil:8)

Re: Mixed-race family

QC,
I'll offer a last comment here:
When living in the Detroit area, one of my part-time jobs was working for the Wayne County Coroner's office driving a wagon and picking up cadavers for delivery to the Morgue. It's a shame that people can do what some do to another and get live despite the heinous crime. The worst was when dealing with a child that was victimized by a parent or live-in-boyfriend. I will not go into this any further because it is offensive to any "Normal" person. Suffice it to say that I, having been exposed to death in many forms, was brought to tears far too many times to make that a career. In war it can be expected. In Civilian life it's quite another thing.

I make no apologies for my prejudice, nor do I say my "experiences" allow me a place on the soapbox to tout this as a life lesson. However, I will say that until you've been exposed to the depravity apparently common to a certain "Class" of people, we are not on common ground.

My experiences are my own. I do not sneer at yours, do not smirk at mine with off-handed comments like " uh, experiences . . . ".

This truly has been a civil discussion and I do appreciate all the comments and sharing of opinions. It is this interchange that makes this group worth participating in.

I thank you all and ask that you accept my best wishes for a very Merry Christmas and hopes for a healthy and prosperous New Year.

Last note, I promise . . .

rmmpe,

That was not a sneer/smirk directed at you at all. It was directed at me. It was honestly only a reference to how many stupid times I used the word experience(s) in one post/sentence . . .

Merry Christmas to you as well.

QC,
My error.................Mea Culpa.

I guess I jump to conclusions because of my somewhat combative nature. An ailment I've lived with a long time.

Regardless, we've all our foibles and it is very often what makes people so damned interesting.

To all; again I thank you and ask that you accept my best wishes for a very Merry Christmas and hopes for a healthy and prosperous New Year.
