Re: Mixed-race family

Race thing/poverty thing...none of the above. Everyone is an individual whose day-to-day behaviors and decisions are the result of experiences.

We all make judgements about the people we encounter - you have to make some kind of judgement in order to decide how to proceed - and those judgements are based on our own experiences and observations and lessons learned from parents or whomever raised us.

Prejudging someone based on the color of their skin, doesn't necessarily make you a racist - acting on the prejudice does.

If rmmpe avoids an encounter with an individual with an attitude, is that racism or just good judgement? If rmmpe assumes that everyone of a different race will have a hostile attitude, I would call that "racism." Of course, if he approaches every encounter with the belief that the person has a hostile attitude, he's much more likely to be right about it, if you know what I mean. Look at me with hate in your eye, you might very well get the same right back atcha. Hey I'm just sayin...

However, when living in Michigan, I was often exposed to, and affected by, low-class blacks. The arrogance and wide-spread "My granddaddy was a Slave and I ain't gonna put up with that and you owe me a living" crap taught me a few things. It's that arrogance and those hostile attitudes that I am prejudice against. It's a .

First, I would submit that you were exposed to "low-class" people, with rotten values and a victim mentality.

Second, if it is honestly a "class thing more than a color thing" I do not understand your miscegeny comments at all . . .

Third, agreement is really not important to me. I am, however interetsted in where we differ. If I take your original words literally, you and I view these things VERY differently. If I take your latest words literally, I am not sure where we differ, except that you believe that we can breed values. I am not sure if you think we can breed them out or in, but it would seem once again we are talking about behavior, not genetics . . .

Well said QC , I especially agree with your first two bullet points.

Yes Rmmpe I am VERY confused now. I do question your expiriences vs age theory. If you took the time to read my posts all of those robberies etc ARE expiriences. They were all done by African Americans and yet I still choose to date a woman that has African American blood. Its not so simple to its expiriences. Its how you percieve them in your mind......I just happen to think the fact I have grown up in a society that is pro racial equality causes me to think a certain way.

I don't know if we are actually talking about race so much as we are talking about cultures. I don't know. As there are functioning, productive and fullfilling cultures around the world, I sure wouldn't say one is better than another. It really comes down to what fullfills each individual.

With that said, there are some cultures that have been artificially created right here in the USA that do give me some pause.

Not a big fan of hip hop, but I do know...that's what my parents used to say about jazz. And rock & roll.

Different opinions are valuable and to be shared. Choosing to give them credit is an individual choice.

My comment about experience and age simply states that those of younger years generally do not have the experience an older person might. Lack of years preclude that. Nothing negative in that statement, just a fact of life.

There are, of course, exceptions.

A few years in Chad, Saudi Arabia, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Israel, India and Egypt have allowed me experiences many others have not had. That all started when I was 26. I'm now 64. A lot of living in 38 years.

But, I am human, with all the imperfections of the species. Not smarter or better than many others; just more experienced.

Usually experience enhances logic, sometimes experience confuses it. I'll give you as an example those who have witnessed terrible events during war. Their experience may lead some to denounce all war for whatever reason, when logically there are times when war is absolutely necessary (another thread maybe, but I believe this is a given).

My "experience" is that there is nothing good that can come from any divisions by race, whether those divisions may at first glance seem logical or practical based on one's, uh, experiences . . .
