So is my 10 hp Evinrude a 1960 or 1962 model? The mounting bracket says #10020, the engine "freeze plug" says #10024. I want to order the right service manual. Or is there not much difference between the 2 years?

I want to disassemble the lower unit and put new seals in, maybe replace the impeller. The lower unit was 2/3 water and 1/3 lube when I got this boat. I refilled, put new washers on the fill and drain screws, took 'er out for a short spin and ended up with tapioca colored goo for lube. I see orange permatex on the lower unit where seals ought to be.

Thanks.

It is likely a 60 with a 62 head on it. Parts are all likely the same, but wait for a guy like FR or Wayne to verify for you. Im pretty sure that all of the major components such as the Ignition System, Cooling System, and Fuel System are the same.

In fact checked part numbers at http://www.laingsoutboards.com/newpage4.htm and they are

Thanks Chris. After I posted I also did a Google image search under 1960 and 1962 Sportwin and found my engine cover to be a 1960 as well.

That site's a cool way to check. Thanks again!

So, then you must have a 1960 with a 1962 powerhead on it? That's good. Much better bearings in the '62 wrist pin end of the con rods. It's possible that the powerhead was changed because the original beat the wrist pins out. If only it could talk.

Of course the other side of the coin is that you may have a '62 where somebody has changed the clamp brackets and hood. Well, that ain't bad either--you still have the good bearings.

Re: Model no. on bracket vs. engine?

I found out that the model number on the bracket doesn't help much on these old motors. I thought I had a 73 85HP Johnson per the bracket ID. It had a cover that said it was a 115HP Evenirdue. Then I found the number on the welch plug and it turned out to be a 1975 135 HP Johnson. Two years younger and 50 more HP! :D
