I was wondering if anyone makes a modern replacement control for a 1975 Merc 1500.

I have the original but want a mor modern replacement, preferably with trim buttons on the lever.

Yes. You have to get th adapter cable extra to adapt the new style plug to yours. CDI/Rapair make a cable less expensive adapter cable than Mercury. I did the same thing on my boat.

Got any more info?

Any pics of yours?

Who is this CDI/Repair?

What does the adapter convert to?

What aftermarket units can I get?

TIA!

Mercury here at iboats marine store. 881170A20 with Power Trim w/ key switch and 20' harness

For power trim models, 20 ft.(6.1 m) harness and built-in warning horn. New design which includes soft grip and power trim leads for front mount switch. Fits all current Mercury / Mariner outboards (with integral power trim) and 1993 and newer Force outboards 40 hp and higher utilizing Mercury style cables (with power trim).

Would a Merc Gen II throttle and cable system work with my motor if I got the new wiring harness per the link above?

I have attached photos below.

For my '75 1500, I lucked out and found a used control box from a mid-80's Merc.... for $50! Ah Craigslist...

The cables worked right off, but I still need to splice the electrical cables. I found a wiring chart on Merc's site, so I'm not too worried about that.

Re: Modern control for old merc inline 6??

I had a later-style control box with PT&T switch in the lever, spliced it into the external wiring harness of my old Merc 1350 and it worked great.

Just follow the wiring diagram and if in any doubt, use a meter to check continuity to the various switches etc.

The best splice would be to use uninsulated solderless connectors insulated with one layer of black electrician's tape then heat shrink tubing over that. For a better connection, solder each splice after you've crimped it. "Stagger" the splices instead of 'stacking' them all in the same location; this'll give a cleaner splice when the cable is wrapped up.

Wrap the entire splice with PVC tape, overlapped; coat with the "liquid tape" stuff and the splice'll be nice and watertight.

Sorry to beat this into the ground . . . . LOL

Using a newer up/down switch, how does it correspond to the older up/down/out configuration? Do I need a separate dash mounted switch for the 'out' function?

On another note, how about the idle lever? On a newer box, pictured below, there is no idle lever, but there is a button at the articulation joint to 'throttle only'. Is the adaptable in place of the idle lever?

Any insight would be helpful.

The button diengages the shift so you can increase revs to warm up. A seperate warm up lever isn't necessary with these type controls.

Does that mean that there is one less cable, or that the same cable is engaged differently?

They all have two cables. One for throttle, one for shifting.

That fast idle lever you are familar with simply advances the throttle without moving the shift cable.

The newer box with the push button disengages the shift mechanism, allowing you to advance the main throttle arm without shifting into gear.

Both perform the same function, using a different technique.

Just what I thought . . . . would it be possible to use a panel mount shift/throttle with no idle lever or button to disengage the shifter - and have a foot pedal that advanced the throttle without advancing the shift mechanism?

Is that a crazy Idea or easily accomplished?
