Time to order modern parts to replace the old cable/pulley steering setup on the 15' runabout I'm restoring. Excellent advice on the iBoats boards as usual. But I haven't seen advice on this.
My steering wheel "bezel" sticks out of the dash at a 45 degree angle up. The dash is straight vertical, and the steering wheel angles up. Every Teleflex steering kit I find listed says it comes "complete with 90 degree bezel, helm,..."
I don't want 90 degrees. I want 45 degrees. Can I order a kit and use my existing bezel, tube, and back mounting nut to keep the 45 degree angle the steering is supposed to have? Anyone done this before? Anyone have a clue what I'm trying to say? The steering wheel would be for sh%t sticking out of the dash at a 90 degree right angle. Thanks!

Take a look at this Teleflex catalog.

Mech. Steering Catalog

Page 18 or 19 shows the bezels for 20* offset on standard steering, the rack systems are adjustable at 10 and 20*, and they offer a full tilt wheel bezel that looks like it will do the 45* you want.

If you can't find what you want, then maybe cutting some PVC pipe to make a 45* wedge that will fit under the 90 bezel might work. My guess is that you will need one front and back.

Browse these catalogs and see what you can find.

Teleflex Marine Catalogs

Re: Modernize cable/pully steering

Thanks for the input and the links. I'll bookmark them and read them thoroughly. It seems like I'll need to start with something like this:
http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...=908560531&**********=669421144&view_id=40298
then do what I can to get the angle I need. Is the dash itself in your '64 angled? Is that the norm? Mine's not. Sigh.
This crazy boat I'm working on just don't fit the mold. At first it looks like any other of a bazillion runabouts from the early 60's but it has some strange attributes. No stringers (never had 'em). Perpendicular dash with a 45* steering bezel. Three ribs in the "hood" that run so far back to the cockpit that they'll make finding a windshield a real challenge.
Of all the driveways in all the neighborhoods in all the world she had to end up in mine.
