I believe some clarification is in order, cowboy. It's generally accepted that john boat and modified V aren't mutually exclusive. Welcome aboard.

Assuming you're talking about both having a flat bottom- with the only difference being the mod-V at the bow.
Flat-front jon boats don't take waves/ wakes well, causing a very wet ride. The mod-V tends to slice oncoming waves at trolling speed, but can still be a wet ride on plane.
I like a mod-V jon boat for backwater fishing.

the only reason i brought this question up is because if beenreading on the internet the for jet motor rigs that the jon boat style supposely allows you to run shallower water then what the mod v would. because im considering making my own jet rig. a 2010 left over 1452 cdl weld craft with a 60/40 jet or buy a 40hp prop motor then buy a jet lower unit for the prop so i can switch the lower units in and out for river and lakes

Cowboy, I think you're confusing a modified V with a V hull. A modified V will run just as shallow as any other john boat because it uses the same flat hull design. What makes it a mod V is the V shaped front, as fun said. Either design will be equally good in skinny water.

Most mod-v jonboats I've seen do have a slight V all the way to the transom. It is like that on my 1648 DMI: http://www.joefishin.com/JonBoatProject.html

I haven't looked at jets in a while, but thout a slight mod v at the transom was prefered for less turbulant water and better pick-up (suction) of water.

As far as drafting through skinny water, doubt the 1-2" lower will make that much of a difference.

Lower unit prop to jet drive changes are not something you want to do on any regular basis.

You're right that traditionally, a jon boat (not John) has a square bow and flat bottom. However, nowadays, a lot of people call a small (12-14) open hull boat a jon boat, even with a deep V or modified V. But there are jon boats over 20'

In theory, the flat bottom can run in shallower water and the V "slaces through the waves." In practice, especially at 14', they draw about the same and a 14' boat isn't doing a lot of slicing. But look at the deadrise at the stern, and you will see how much more the various V hulls require.

As for skinny water, it's not so much what you can run in, it's what you can pole in, or walk the boat across. An extra 2" does not determine whether you run full speed on a plane over 6" of water.

the real advantage of the jon over the V is that the jon is way more stable, which is important in a small boat for fishing or that you will be moving around in to pole, etc.

Look at the Chincoteague Scow--that is a superior design, combining the best of all worlds: seaworthy, flat, light, stable, shallow draft.

The difference between the two has been covered above. To determine what is best for you you need to consider what type of water you are planning on boating on and what are the characteristice of that water. Pick the semi v if the water gets rough, the jon if it is generally tranquil.

Re: modified v vs jon boat

My 1870 Express MV jon boat has a 6 degree deadrise at the transom and a pointed bow, it rides better in a chop than a plain "flat-bottomed" jon boat, but it's still a hard ride in most rough water. When the water is rough or with a chop I mostly just have to slow way down and just barge my way through it, but since we're mostly on rivers, streams and smaller lakes, it's not much of a problem. The flat or flatter bottom boats are very stable for fishing, hunting and utility purposes. You just need to buy the best boat for your usage. Good Luck!
