Re: Mods & Rules

Well if DC is really supposed to be what would be talked about on a dock at a boat launch, then politics would certainly be allowed. It could be heavily moderated and still kept a family site. To me, in an election year with so much riding on this election with economy, terrorism, the war, etc, politics is a very big part of this country and thus a part of every American's life. If you simply turn a nose to politics and say "I don't want to talk about it" then you have no right to complain about who gets elected.

I mean think about it, on a real dock, if a conversation was started up about politics and you didn't want to hear it, you could walk away. It's even easier here, and at least here by the thread title you'd get advanced warning that it's a political thread. It would then be up to you whether or not you participated. The rest of the forum is moderated heavily and kept on topic so if you wanted to only chat boats, you can do that without going near a political thread.

I don't make the rules and I don't understand the reasoning behind some of them, but I just go with the flow.

Re: Mods & Rules

Well, I don't agree, WITF.

There are numerous opportunities to "talk about" (insult, bash, call names and get in fights) politics, religion and other controversial topics elsewhere.

On a real dockside, where you must face those with whom you discuss, people tend to remain civil. It is not that way on the net. Anonymity releases the worst in us. Dock management usually don't allow fights and neither do we.

Six years of trying to moderate "discussions" on those topics convinced me that if we are to remain a civilized discussion board we must not allow topics that quickly turn into honky tonk barroom brawls.

It is iboats management wish that we remain civilized.

It it easier to paint a grey picture. Just mix both black and white and the masses will be happy. Then nobody will ever be wrong and truth will be relative..

BTW does anyone need their "Carbon Foot-Print Offset"? If so contact me via PM and lets OFF-SET that carbon and the guilt. Help Earth.

That would be why I said it should be moderated, in fact I used the term "heavily moderated". I didn't say have an unmoderated "free-for-all" political section.

This above-quoted post is pretty tame in comparison to what used to be commonly posted here back when the moderators "went with the flow," but I think you get the idea. Political discussions generally degenerated into people ridiculing the positions of others, or directly ridiculing those people. If it were a dock, I'd have found another place to launch.

I think the mods are doing a fine job of keeping things cordial around here. Sure, there are going to be people who try to sneak things by in violation of the rules, or toss in nonsense just to stir up the pot, but those posts are the exception now. There was a time when they were the rule. Check the archives if you don't believe me.

i boats is a boating store. how would the above type of thread sell you a boat part? why oh why would they even want to go in this direction?.

also, the mods dont get paid here, so why put them thru that kind of torture?

this is a fantastic forum....and imho its properly moderated.

Re: Mods & Rules

actually the Mods are not compensated for their work here. sure we get a small discount when ordering parts, from the iboats store, but how many personal parts can a guy order.

it is strickly a love of boating, and having a safe family orientated place for others to learn, about there boats and safe boating.

it was a thankless job, getting back to where it is. but, hearing what you are now saying. makes all the grief we took, in open forums, and PM's, worth every minute of grief we took.

thanks. Bob

Re: Mods & Rules

Well here's my thanks mods for an awesome job. I have been a member of other forums that got so hostile, the people that wanted to talk about what the forum was originally created for, left. I want to learn and occasionally help someone and the humor and sarcasm here is hilarious at times. If a wanted Jerry Springer, I'd turn on the TV. Great job!

Re: Mods & Rules

Yes we should fill in a request to revisit the longest thread on Iboats history.Let me think, maybe we should ask moderator SBN.Rumor has it that he knows where that thread came from and where it went to.

Re: Mods & Rules

I noticed that a few of the more spirited posters drifted away after dockside was heavily moderated. I do miss some of the arguing that went on. Most were harmless, but some were out of hand. I guess the new rules are for the best.

Hey! Can we talk about transgendered pregnant democrats and their impact on the election and boating? Huh? Can we? Huh? Huh?????? :D:D:D

Re: Mods & Rules

They do a fine job, but now that they don't allow political threads....their workload has easily been cut by probably 2/3. I mean now there is really nothing to do but move misplaced threads and participate as regular members. They do spend a lot of time reading and whatnot, but if they do get discounts on merchandise, I would call that "earning" money doing it. Of the 12 forums I'm a member of, this is the only one where the mods get discounts (i.e. compensation) for their efforts.

They do a good job. I don't want my minor gripes to sound like they dont. I just think that political threads should be allowed. To blame a thread subject for people getting angry, I mean what if all of a sudden people got angry when talking about boats? A subject does not make a forum not a family forum, members do, and those members should be dealt with individually. To punish everyone when it was a handful that made the forum a shouting match isn't very fair.

I know, I'm about the lone voice in the wind, but I'm going to stand my ground in the "I think politics should be allowed" arena. No insults meant toward the mods. I just don't agree with the decision.

Re: Mods & Rules

Been a lot of changes since I joined, but none like 9-07. I liked the old days and many of the members. It gets overwhelming thinking of the screenames that have moved on. As the membership grew so did the number of posts. The mods just couldn't keep up. Then when the foot came down, members whined.

This was my first forum and pretty much the only one I use or visit. This is like my home site. I know other forums where many of the past members moved onto. They maybe gone, but I feet that no matter what their opinions are, they are good people.

I had the opportunity to meet Spinner, gonfishn, and BrianFD at one of the Cellar Dweller get together. No doubt, we had a great time. Spinners boat,,,,,,,,,,,its fast :D

Great job mods,,,,,,,did a good job cleaning the road house atmosphere :D
