I have a '73 50 hp Evinrude. I have replaced the ignition switch and solenoid. The motor will start and run well, if I start it by jumping across the solenoid posts with the ignition on. The electric choke works with ingition on. When you turn the key to "start" nothing happens, no clicking or any other sound (that I can hear). What do I check next? Are there tests that I can perform to verify a problem without merely throwing more parts at the problem? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Sounds like you got the ignition switch wiring wrong.

Re: more starting problems

Thanks guys for you input. I bought an original Evinrude switch. It was exactly like the one I took off. To minimize mis-wiring I put each wire on the new switch as I removed it from the old switch. In searching these forums I have found only one entry pertaining to "testing" the ignition switch wiring. The post said to have a red/yellow wire, that should have 12V when the key is in start position, on the "S" tab on the switch. I am not aware of any other suggestions as to how to determine if the switch is wired correctly. Again thank you for your thoughts, anymore?
