My first thought is the shift interuptor needs adjusting. Try this only on a trailer: Putting it into reverse and by pass the netural safety switch and disconnect the shift interuptor switch, then see if it will start and run in reverse.

The motor turns over but will not start.and where is that?

If the motor is turning over in reverse you bypassed the netural safety switch. Shift interuptor is on the shift plate where the throttle cable and shift cables are located.

Item 18 is the shift interuptor for this engine. BTW I don't know what year, type or serial number your engine is

As Alldodge implied, there is timing or adjustment to be considered anytime you replace something related to MC shifting or interrupt switch. I had a 1986 SR AJ with dual MC 350 I/Os and we could never get one motor's "kill" switch in perfect time. And, your switch could have simply gone "bad." However, since it happened after you replace a shift cable, I suspet timing is off a bit and switch is closed in fwd (dead ground). Get your multimeter out!

ok where is this switch. Are you talking about the neutral safety switch? if not where is this switch?I may of missed a post or something. The only thing that has wires going to it is the neutral safety on the throttle control unit.
