Re: Motor got hot smelled electrical burrning

I got my motor tore apart heads off and they are going to the machine shop. but I have a piston that is toasted has chucks of the ring on top of it burt good from when the motor got hot. the cylinder walls seem to feel ok. Im going to pull the motor completely out and change the one piston and all the rings and bearings while the block is out and reassemble. any thoughts?

Manage to get any pics to post of the carnage?

Well, that's gonna make it harder.

You might try connecting a hose to the water input part of each manifold/riser and see if you get any reduction in flow through it.

If the riser is severely clogged you will actually pressurize the riser with hose pressure. and the flow of water at the exhaust end will be lower.

There should be NO reduction in flow of water though the manifold-riser.

It'll be very hard to tell if there's any internal leaks (into the exhaust tubes) unless you can actually use a little mirror and look while running the water.

There's other ways to check for internal cracks by positioning the manifold/riser with the exhaust -UP, capping water-IN connection and filling with a solvent like Lacquer Thinner or Acetone. (the tiny molecules of thinner will find cracks and seep though them)

If you have fairly old manifold/risers and they're rusty inside or you suspect/discover cracks, they should be replaced.

Salt water manifolds and risers should be replaced far more often than manifolds used only in fresh water. Fresh water manifolds will last for many years. Salt (raw) water manifolds can be junk in 3-5 years...........

A small leak in the exhaust area of a riser/manifold allows water to leak back into an open exhaust valve after every shutdown.

If the engine sits for a long time after shutdown (like after winterization), you don't discover it until Spring when the engine will not turn-over because that cyl is rusted solid!!

Cheers,

Rick

Don't be surprised if you're replacing the engine again soon when it trashes that new piston and rings. Doesn't take much out-of-round in a cylinder to wipe out a new piston. At the very least have it checked with a bore gauge for taper and roundness while it's at the machine shop.

hmmm first i have heard that. So take the whole block apart and all the pistons out to have just one cylinder checked or should i just check the one burnt pistons cylinder?

You're going to find it VERY difficult to replace all the rings and bearings without taking the block apart and all the pistons out ..... :)

I would check all the cylinders while you have it apart, see how close it is to the wear limits before you waste a bunch of money and time on it. If you need a new (or good used) block, now would be a good time to find out!

Re: Motor got hot smelled electrical burrning

makes good sense. what should it cost me to have the heads and blocked checked? should I change all the pistons as well or just the burnt one?

Also crazy idea but what not upgrade to a 350 or at least a vortec 4.3?
the boat is a chaparral 2050 cudy she could use a bit more power? PS it is OMC.

Should I also check the intake manifold and exhaust manifolds? The manifolds are one piece. Im going to order a long block from Rapido Marine

Yeah. He's talking about the exhaust manifolds.

It's NEVER good using "used" and possibly questionable exhaust manifolds/risers on a "new" engine.

You can check the intake manifold too for corrosion in the thermostat area for rust and corrosion. If it's questionable you probably should replace it too.

You're going to put a fair amount of money in the engine. It's worth it to get new manifolds/risers.

Ayuh,... The 1 piece manifolds are Known to test Just Fine,....
Then Catastrophically Dump water into the motor....

Like I said,... Toss 'em,... They're a Tickin' Time Bomb...

Re: Motor got hot smelled electrical burrning

Hmm,

Well Doug Russell has them....

0984222 MANIFOLD AY-STBD 1 $1,299.99

I think that's the per-unit price........... And I guess you need 2 of them. ~$2600

There's GLM (sort of "Offshore" manufactured),

http://www.sterndrive.info/262_cid_1986_to_1990_v6_manifold_.html

They'll be around $550 + shipping. (maybe another $100) for 2, maybe $1200.
(They say they're not available yet I think)

Here's another choice. http://www.go2marine.com/product.do?no=153929F&WT.mc_id=gb1

They're are Osco manifolds and risers.

I just did a google search. and found the above.

You have an engine/drive combination made by a company that no longer exists.

The "after-market" did not
(and doesn't) support some models very well.

Consider yourself lucky you don't have a 460 King Cobra!!

Good Luck

Rick

that is crazy **** that the motor is cheaper than the exhaust manifolds WTF?
