I have a 19 ft randall craft bassboat with a 12 in. set back jackplate. Never had a jackplate before and was wanting to know how much higher is the motor set than on the transom?

You need to look at the cavation plate on the engine, it should be even or slightly higher than the bottom of the boat.

I was under the impression that the farther back the motor sat, the higher you could set the motor. As the water exits the rear of the boat, the water will rise, therefore you can mount the motor higher. This inturn will give you better performance and economy.

You are correct but you're going to have to experiment with it as every boat is different.

Correct. It also depends on which lower unit you have, what type of water pickup you have (standard or low water) and what prop you're running. Bass boats typically run on a pad (delta pad) so that is where you'd start with the 1" above measurement.

When you start to play with engine heights, probably best to invest in a water pressure gauge. You won't be able to see if you have the engine mounted too high-and the top water inlet holes are running out of the water. The gauge is an engine lifesaver for anyone running a jackplate.

The rule of thumb is you can go up 1" for every 5" you go back. If your boat has a stepped transom you can go up slightly more perhaps. Your final X dimension is a marriage between hull design, prop technology, balance and intended use.

You should be able to tee off of your tell-tale for a water pressure guage.
