I was just reading my manual (1988 90 crossflow) and it says the acceptable range is about 130-160 but there are some conditions.
The inlet water should be 70 +/- 10 degrees and the engine should be run up to 3000 for 5 minutes before idle testing and also run up to 5000 for additional testing.
Testing should be done on the top of the heads.
Perhaps our thinking is being swayed by a bad bunch of test conditions & test methods?
Very cold inlet water, pump sucking air, IR gun shooting all over the shop, time to nail it down if it passes the drop test.
