I am not there to look see.-----Did one of these a while back where one head gasket was installed wrong.---------Tabs on top and arrows pointing to each other is the correct way ??

OP sent me pix of the head gaskets a while back - tabs were at top and to outside on each bank which is correct.

y'know, wouldn't be a bad idea to thoroughly flush and back flush that cooling system if you haven't done that. Check out the ignition as suggested, but then you might pull off the l.u. and flush up through the water tubing. Find a way to flush down as well -- typically though t.stat housings and into and around cylinder cooling passages with the head covers removed. Look up in the leg under the powerhead with a flashlight -- make sure there are no obstacles or debris.

I was just reading my manual (1988 90 crossflow) and it says the acceptable range is about 130-160 but there are some conditions.
The inlet water should be 70 +/- 10 degrees and the engine should be run up to 3000 for 5 minutes before idle testing and also run up to 5000 for additional testing.
Testing should be done on the top of the heads.

Perhaps our thinking is being swayed by a bad bunch of test conditions & test methods?
Very cold inlet water, pump sucking air, IR gun shooting all over the shop, time to nail it down if it passes the drop test.

Ok guys heres the deal i took it to a friend he ran it in a better barrell and the temp is way better, 150 on both sides. But now, i have exhaust amd water leaking from the thermostat area. My friend said that its the gasket between the powerhead and mid section, and i would have to pull apart the powerhead to change the gasket. Any input?

You have to REMOVE the powerhead !---No need to pull it apart.

Ok so i found out the thermostat housing was loose, and thats why it was leaking water and exhaust. We are all good i think. Thanks guys for all the help!
