Motor taking more cranking to start

Hi everyone, wanted to ask a couple of quick questions firstly, is a harder start a sign of lowering compression, I have noticed it is taking my motor a bit longer to start, I crank it more than I used to, but in saying that once it has warmed up, it will start hit every time. I finally got my new comp gauge now, but I am SCARED to test it, as I am no internal mehanic.
I can tune outboards, maintain them and alter them, but when it comes to taking them apart and repairing them, well let's just say I always end up with some bolts left over. Am I just better biting the bullet and doing my compression and if it is pretty even, just let it go without further repair, or should I repair the bad compression now. Anyway I will post my compression readings tomorrow hopefully.

I would suspect something possibly in the ignition system before compression if once it does start it runs fine. Might be something simple as a fouled plug.

Re: Motor taking more cranking to start

Thanks pnwboat, but I normally clean my plugs before I start it, also when I adjusted the idle screw up to get 750 in forward, it seemed to stay around 800 out of gear which still seemed to low, I put it inot gear again and it had dropped to 650 - 700 rpm instead of the 750 I first set it at. Checking compression today let you know either way. Thinking of re-doing my idle set-up again but this time after comp test and in the water not in my esky.

Do your initial settings in the Esky, final adjustments always in the water.

Slower starting?
Dirty plugs,low comp,weak starter,weak battery.
Someones been messing with the idle,or messing with the air screws?
Someones been messing with the timing?

So what's the comp??

I knew you would see this and comment jerryjerry and to be honest I was scared when I saw your name against the thread, I will do comp today even though I have been saying that for 2 weeks LOL. I have messed around with idle screw but it was to obtain a 750 rpm at forward as it was only getting 650 - 700, but it was the same then and timing is right, it is set at 32deg on the flywheel @ WOT with a volt meter having a 0 - 12 volt reading when hitting the distributor belt. It starts first go when warm. I am thinking comp. sad face.

Re: Motor taking more cranking to start

OK this is the update I have been waiting to post, after jerryjerry advising me to do another comp test, I went and bought a reasonable good quality gauge, stanley, probably not the best one but better than the $40 cheapos. Please note the attachments below, I am the proud owner of a 100hp Chrysler with 150+psi on all. Timing was ok, so jerryjerry, it leads me to believe something is either wrong with my carbie air screw set-up, or a piece of crud has gotten through my defences of filters.

Ok the photos above are in order of cylinder, thanks guys for the correct procedure, and the advice about gauges.
Any comments regarding slow start up would be appreciated, I may go back to link and sync, I know my throttle linkage is right, I know my cam is right, the only thing I am not 100% on is my carbie settings or if they are clogged.

Re: Motor taking more cranking to start

Ok I have the answer we have all been waiting for, why is McLovin's 100HP Chrysler starting having to crank it more? answer, McLovin is a d..kh..d and put too long a bolt into the TC carb covers, stopping the choke plunger from pulling up, I changed the bolt out to a smaller one and wala, by magic it starts correctly. Someitmes I need to give myself a good upper-cut.

You missed one jerryjerry, some idiot (namely me)putting too long a screw in the carbie covers and stopping the choke plunger from working
