I have a 1974 70 hp Esl that has just been rebuilt. It has 125 psi on all 3 cyl. It has good spark done with a professional spark checker, new plugs, fuel pump is pumping good(no leaks anywhere), carbs have been rebuilt with new needle and seat. Timing is at 24. It runs fine on the muffs at the house and idles fine. When I take it to the lake it idles fine around 900-1000rpm, but when I put it into idle drive(first notch) or idle reverse(first notch) it will run for a little bit then quit. Then I have to give it some fast idle and CHOKE it all over again just like it was cold even though it has run for a while.......? not good for trying to load it on the trailer!

Re: motor will not stay running at idle

Welcome to iboats fellow star wars fan...:)

First thing I would check is to put the motor in neutral and spin the prop by hand. It should turn very easily. If it doesn't then pull the prop and see it it ate some fishing line and wrapped it around the prop shaft. If there is no fishing line there, and the prop feels like something is binding, then suspect something is wrong with the lower unit.

Second, I would put the boat in water, and open the idle needle valves a quarter turn out and see if that improves things. Have you done a link and sync like specified in the top secret thread at the top of this forum?

There isn't anything around the prop...whole motor just rebuilt along with the foot.....I didn't see the place in "top secret" you where talking about to answer that part of your question......and the prop moves just fine..where are the needle valve adjust screws you're talking about?

You could be simply idling to slow.

I took it out on the lake today and noticed every time I cut it off I had to use fast idle and choke to get it started again.....now what

use the force Luke!

Here is a link to your carbs with a parts description. On part 27 idle orfice. Find a single strand of electric wire and make sure the orfaces are clean in each carb. They may look clean to the naked eye, but just a slight amount of build up can cause problems. Good luck! that is your mission should you choose to accept it or not. http://www.boats.net/parts/search/BRP/JOHNSON/1974/70ESL74M/CARBURETOR/parts.html
