OK i bought and refinished a swimplatform for my 1977 Sea Ray 260. I am ready to mount it to the transom but I am concerned about the mounting process.

My concerns are primarily about how to drill the mounting holes. How do I make sure that I don't drill into something important?

Is there a way to determine the exact location of the holes on the inside to avoid this problem?

Any suggestions or help are appreciated!!!!

Ayuh,.... Measure from known points,....

Mock it up where you Think you want it, mark the holes, then Measure, inside, 'n out,...
Then readjust to where it's Pratical to mount it...;)

Re: Mounting Swim Platform

Precisely, but what is a "Known point" Cant use the bottom or the edge as I don't know the EXACT hull thickness. The Transom is too tall to see over to look inside and outside at the same time. There are mounting holes that have been repaired for the factory swim platform but I cant find them on the inside, what is the best way to locate them? I cant just use them as the new mount is different than the old one.

Re: Mounting Swim Platform

Do you have transom eyes or anything that is bolted to the transom with a nut and bolt? If not what about measuring from the bilge drain.

Hello m8...

Are you going to Through bolt..or just screw into the transom ?

IF through bolt then find something from the inside thats through and take angle measurements..inside and out to determine every hole before drilling.

Re: Mounting Swim Platform

my 2 cents!

float her and find the water line, mark it with crayon or grease pencil etc....

place swim platforms at that level, they will be out of the water at speed and just at the surface at float engine off....

if you go bolt through (which is not necessarily the norm) make sure there wont be any stuff on the inside ini the way ...otherwise big SS screws work well and are acceptable.

post some pics when you get it on! should look sharp!

And make sure to SEAL the holes well afterwards (at the risk of stating the obvious).

Re: Mounting Swim Platform

The brackets that came with the platform have two thru hull mounting bolts on each approx 1/2" diameter.

Good call on the stern eyes I will try that and let you know. Will post b4 and after picts when I complete the install. Thanks for all the advice so far.

BTW can't get a straight line from the bilge drain as have twin engines in the way so the stern eyes pose the best chance of a clear line to measure from.

Hello m8s..

DO NOT use Silicone...

Unless you like rotted transoms...

Anyone on Iboats want to tell me where sillycone could/should be used on a boat is more then welcome to open another post...

5200 = under waterline ( through hull fittings ).
4200 = some topside fittings ( gas/fuel .. waste fittings etc. ).
4000 = hardware
Silicone = glue for a temp window broken on your car...

If you took a level and pulled a straight line up from the drain hole on the inside and outside of the transom you could get a point to measure side to side from. Just a thought, hope it helps...
