Got all the sheetrock hung. Then this past Friday evening I started spackling. Took me a long time to tape up about 8 ft of wall. I realized it will take me a month or so to finish spackling. So I called a Tom, a guy who has done this before for me, and is the guy who did the sheetrock in the house when it was built in 1992. Sunday he is there working with his 17 year old son. Took the two of them 3 hours to do initial tape job. But it is nice and clean.

In 1998 Tom hung and spackled the master br and bath (16x20 and 9x12). I bought the sheetrock (4x16 sheets of 1/2"). He did nice work and charged $600 for him and his helper.

Today he is just spackling, as I hung all the rock. Room is 21x24, 3 exterior walls, one interior wall both sides, entire stair well and built in space under stairwell. Just walls because the ceiling is going to be tiles. His price was $450! We agreed on $400 and he used some mud and tape I offered him to save materials cost. He needs a total of 3 visits over the next week to finish the job.

He based his price on how many feet of tape he had to do. Told me that the rates had gone up since '98. I guess so! But regardless, it is worth it to me because the project will move ahead that much faster. And having a pro do the finish work will ensure the walls and joints look great. And I am dead tired from working on this basement almost every night.

Tom is the kind of contractor you like to have around. He showes you technique and tricks and doesn't mind (or built into his price) extras that I hadn't counted on. And not once did he complain about my sheetrock hanging skills!

I gotta get this done soon. Don't want it eating into my boating projects!
