Got all the sheetrock hung. Then this past Friday evening I started spackling. Took me a long time to tape up about 8 ft of wall. I realized it will take me a month or so to finish spackling. So I called a Tom, a guy who has done this before for me, and is the guy who did the sheetrock in the house when it was built in 1992. Sunday he is there working with his 17 year old son. Took the two of them 3 hours to do initial tape job. But it is nice and clean.

In 1998 Tom hung and spackled the master br and bath (16x20 and 9x12). I bought the sheetrock (4x16 sheets of 1/2"). He did nice work and charged $600 for him and his helper.

Today he is just spackling, as I hung all the rock. Room is 21x24, 3 exterior walls, one interior wall both sides, entire stair well and built in space under stairwell. Just walls because the ceiling is going to be tiles. His price was $450! We agreed on $400 and he used some mud and tape I offered him to save materials cost. He needs a total of 3 visits over the next week to finish the job.

He based his price on how many feet of tape he had to do. Told me that the rates had gone up since '98. I guess so! But regardless, it is worth it to me because the project will move ahead that much faster. And having a pro do the finish work will ensure the walls and joints look great. And I am dead tired from working on this basement almost every night.

Tom is the kind of contractor you like to have around. He showes you technique and tricks and doesn't mind (or built into his price) extras that I hadn't counted on. And not once did he complain about my sheetrock hanging skills!

I gotta get this done soon. Don't want it eating into my boating projects!

Having a contractor like that is indeed a good thing. The only thing better is having a SIL who is a contractor. I start by mentioning a project just to see his reaction. If he offers to help I turn him down. When I start the job I make sure to do it on a weekend when he isn't busy. I get started, screw something up or need to borrow a tool. He offers again to help, I accept and then the job gets finished right while I turn into the gofer. LF cooks a meal, he goes home full and I get my project done right. Works for me! :D

My FIL pulls the same scam on me. I told him outright BEFORE you screw anything up, give me a call...besides, he makes one of the best martini's I've ever had ;)

Thats a fair price Mark! I estimate finishing T&M @ $.33sf on 8' walls / $.43sf on 8' ceilings with inside/outside corners @ $.87lf.

If he finish coats it smooth as a baby's arse consider yourself in 'deal heaven'.

:)

Now... what kind of texture are you going with?

I'm going to paint it a nice semigloss color of my wife's choosing. I figure about 12 gallons. 6 primer, 6 color.

What do you mean by texture?

Mark

little tiny bumps on the surface. It hides imperfections in the drywall. You spray on liquified drywall compound. It's a lot of fun.

During my stint as a construction helper we did several interiors in what was called "orange peel"texture. It does hide the small imperfections and I personally like the way it looks.

>>>>>>>HAPPY BOATING DREAMS<<<<<<<

MARK - STOP!!

GO WITH A FLAT PAINT!

Semi-gloss and worse yet - gloss  interior paints will show EVERY SLIGHT imperfection in the walls. They'll stand out and bite ya!

..does the contractor know you're going with a semi-gloss paint?

Re: Moving along with basement finishing.

Barlow,

I like semi-gloss. Lots of rooms in my house are painted in semi. Some have gloss ceilings too. They look nice. And shiny. With the new sheetrock it should look good. The problem is upstairs all the doors and trim are done in an oak stain & gloss poly, so there is no gloss trim to paint and clash with a semi gloss wall. The basement will be painted trim. So I guess it would be better with an egg shell finish on the wall, and gloss on the trim and doors.

Remember, I got kids, and kids make hand prints on the wall. Washing a wall full of bumps sounds like trouble. So I'll stick with the washable egg shell finish.

Spray bumps on my new clean walls? Why I aughtta....... :D

Good point on the kids thing Mark.I keep forgetting about that since mine are all grown. You definitely want smooth and easy to clean.

We are starting our bathroom remodel in a couple of weeks. The wife and daughter are excited about that.
