microsoft wants to update my computer. the new update is called malacious software removal tool. well it auto installed it and the next thing i know, i can't get online... my zone alarm firewall prevents it. it also just keeps trying to get online so it's a circle. trying to get online, zone alarm prevents it. trying to get online, zone alarm prevents it....
so my question is why is my firewall trying to prevent it? is ms trying to spy on me? what do i need to do to either allow it on zone alarm. or maybe. i don't really want this update... any opinions?
as of right now, i uninstalled the update or i wouldn't even be here to ask the question as i wouldn't be able to get here.... and that i can't have. gotta have my iboats fix everyday ya know.....;)

I did the same update earlier today, i encountered no problems. It just says restart required, which i did and went i about my merry ways.

Re: ms security update?

yep, i restarted too. my problem didn't go away so easy though. bummer.

thanks for the link phantomII. now i know i'm not the only one with issues. guess i inadvertently did the halfway fix of uninstalling it. i don't like the other idea of going to medium security setting in my zone alarm firewall at all. i run high protection for all adjustments available to me.

so now the question is. how bad do i need the ms security update? and what are the risks of not updating? in the read. it looks like someone could get in between and attack my computer w/o the update. that don't sound to good either... whats everyone else doing for their repair....

for the folks not having issues. is your security setting in the zone alarm firewall, in the internet zone, set at medium? that could perhaps answer why your not having a problem.... mine is set at high.... looks like theres only those two fixes per phantoms link inside a link. set za firewall internet zone at medium or uninstall the ms security update.....

You will find that problem with other downloads also. It just sense that your computer is trying to protect you, but there has to be leway/sacrifice if you want the update. You have to decide which is the most valuable to you.

Guys it only runs once if you want to use it again you have to go to the MS site and DL it.....so bottom line is lower your security level install it ....restart your computer then raise your security level back up

Re: ms security update?

That's good. You really don't need a firewall like zone alarm if you have a router and practice safe computing :)

ya, i'm hip. this is good

i did have a router, but don't anymore as i only have 1 computer in the house...... i don't understand why the router would have anything to do with protecting me from incoming attacts against my compter.... dosn't a router, just route my incoming signal to more than one compter? cable(broadband) in to the modem, modem out to the router, router splits it and sent it off to two computers.... the sons gone now, so no reason for the router anymore is why it's out of the picture..... modem now straight to my computer...
and practice safe computing :)
:) well, i try too. in 99 i didn't even know what a start menu was..... as for safe computing. i don't know what that is..... i do run za on high, and avg on high, together.... both scan daily for attacks. i don't open any email unless i know who it's from..... is this safe computing? if there's more. i wanna know so i can be more hip (protected) than i am.....

Re: ms security update?

The router set up properly will give you a hardware firewall through "NAT" which is Network Address Translation among other things such as MAC filtering which is generally considered superior to a software firewall.
I don't use ZA any longer, just the Windows software firewall and the hardware firewall that is part of my network.
I have no fear of unauthorized intrusions and AVG free is giving me my virus protection. It makes life simpler......ZA is a hassle just by itself.
I would definatly run it if I did not have a router though.Ron G

Personally, I would ditch the ZA, get a router and don't open emails from unknown people. If this is a laptop and you connect to unknown networks(coffee shops and other WiFi hotspots), I would keep ZA but if this is for a home network with a router, you are as just as safe without ZA. ZA is slowing down your sytem enough that I wouldn't want it on there.
