I don't think you'll find straight 30 synthetic. Detergent or non-detergent probably doesn't matter much. Just make sure you change it out each fall when you put it away.

It means 30W regular oil. I do believe it gives an option for 10W30 synthetic for all temperature ranges.

I would agree with this but I would use Detergent oil. But as some here would say any (oil is better than no oil) or something like that.......

All Briggs and Stratton engines call for 10w30 in any summer operating conditions. Straight 30w is obsolete. Synthetic is really helpful in warm weather - Briggs oil temps run around 300-400 degrees, which is really hard on oil.

I use mobil 1 in my briggs 18hp and when I started useing it it was useing oil, now it is not! I Have not had to add oil since the synthetic oil went in. plugs also last longer, didn't help with mower blades though.
I have read somewhere that briggs now recomends multi wait oils for all there moters. As for 30w oil, it is not on the shelves roun here obsolete or not you can't get it here.

You're supposed to change the oil?
I use what ever is left over from my last oil change... sometimes it's extra oil from the boat... sometimes it's extra oil from my truck. 8 years later and the mower is still running strong. Most guys never change the oil and still get 10 years out of a mower. Think about it.

I put in 10W40 castrol gtx last time, the mower sounds like the engine is knocking a bit. The stuff that came out of it was like used gear oil. I did change it in the neighbours mower to 10W40 and he said it runs a lot better, I didnt hear any knocking yet.

Been there done that...used multi-vis oil on a BS engine in a chipper shredder. It was a 1 year old engine and started using oil and I didn't catch it in time and burn't out the engine. Straight 30W from now on!

Local WM still stocks 30W as of last month. Had a couple of brands to choose from. It must be a conspiracy. They took DZZP out of the multi-grade oils and now they're hiding the 30W to keep people from using it in their cars.

Don't blame your lack of maintainence on the oil. Like I said, straight 30w oil is obsolete in every application. There is a reason most places don't sell it anymore. The only reason they still make it is because there are so many stubborn old guys who don't know what they are talking about and think they still need it. I have a Briggs and Stratton master service technician certification, and I can just about rebuild one with my eyes closed. The recommendation, and factory fill from B&S is 10w30 oil. 10w30 oil will NOT cause increased consumption unless there is something wrong with your engine, in which case 30w oil is only a bandaid - a poor one at that. 10w40 would be a better choice to reduce consumption, but if it's that bad the engine isn't going to last much longer anyway.

Multigrade oils are especially important in small engines due to the fact that they do not have an oil pump. Thinner oil when cold means the top of the engine (where the cylinder is!) will get oil much faster. There was a day when 30w was prefered, because the multigrade oils of the time just couldn't hold up to the extreme temperatures in a small engine. That is no longer true with todays oils. Synthetic is even better, and since you only need about half a quart, there is no reason not to spend the extra two bucks. I have done an oil analysis on 5 different types of oil in a B&S engine...you know which one shows the least amount of wear? Amsoil 10w30.

Some of us like to keep our machines in tip top shape so they last a lifetime and run their best, others don't. The choice is yours. You could probably get over 100,000 miles in a modern car without changing the oil too...or you could change it regularly and get 200,000 miles. An engine with superb maintainence all it's life will start easier, have more horsepower, use less fuel, make less noise, and pollute less than a neglected engine. Sure, it still starts and mows the lawn every week if you don't change the oil, but it could be running much better if you did. There is a lot more to an engine than it runs or it doesn't. The question is how well do you want it to run?

It is also important to realize current production engines from any manufacturer are much less tolerant of neglect than the old B&S flatheads that run forever, thanks to the EPA sticking their nose where it doesn't belong.

And, BTW, the "leftover" oil most people have laying around is 10w30, which is exactly what you should be using.

I changed the oil at 5 hours with 30W and then at the end of the season with 10W-30. The oil loss occured the following season. I am in So Cal so the temps I use it in are almost always between 70 and 90 degrees.

When I purchased a new motor, the BS dealer is the one that told me to use only 30W.

You said it ran low, that means you didn't check the oil level like you're supposed to. More importantly, it used oil because there was something wrong with the engine, not because you used 10w30. I've ruined some engines due to oil mistakes too, but I don't blame it on the oil. Usually salesmen are clueless as to the maintainence needs of products they sell...they have no certification, that's why they're salesmen and not mechanics.

Coming from someone who doesn't have a clue what he's talking about...

How 'bout you keep your off topic bull**** out of the tech section and not hijack this guy's thread with useless information, ok?
