Mushroom shaped gasket? Bottom of alpha 1 by hydraulic hoses

Hello. I was replacing the anodes on my outdrive and one of the anode below where the hydraulic hoses on the stern drive connect. It also came with a gasket and a little rubber item that shaped like a mushroom that has a hole-in-one in and then goes through most of the length of that item. Since I was down there I pried out the old one and realize that it must be seated in there and trying to figure out how do I replace it with the new one. Do I need to disconnect that fitting that the hoses are connected to? If so I assume I need to lower the outdrive because I will probably lose hydraulic fluid? What is that item do? Or what is its function? What is the gasket for? Does that go between the anode and that fitting or does it go inside when I remove that fitting? Thank you for your help.

Hello Frank,

Ignore the goofball, he's always doing things like that. :D Not at all like me.

That rubber plug is the insulator for the wires in drives with an active corrosion protection system called Mercathode. As you don't have that, don't worry about the rubber mushroom. Toss it if you wish.

As for removing hoses to replace anodes. Nope, don't need to do that either. All the anodes can be replaced with the only thing needing to be removed is the propeller. (Anode on the rear end of the bearing carrier)....

May be a goofball, but that was a good bump and you had the answer. :thumb:

Further to tossing the plug. Just make sure the one in the manifold is still there...

Chris.....

EDIT: Just re-read your post. You pried out the old one. Bugger! According to the manual it can be done without disconnecting the manifold or hoses. I suggest using Power Tune to help it slide in.....
