ooooo! I like it even better than my first thought of glove box. That is more space that is even more accessible. Did you make that out of plywood or aluminum?

hole.jpg
measure the location of the hole and mark the inside area location

if not inside a rib, get some aluminum for patching, if inside, get some filler like silicone II

A rivet and JB from the outside is something I would do to fill the void, then attack from inside as a redundancy

Here is the hole. After doing some more poking around and shining a light up in there it looks like I am fortunate and it is not through the hull in that spot. The water I saw some out must be coming from a place down the line and dropping into that runner type thing and when I put the boat down it ran back down toward the bow and out the hole.

Is that the keel drain by any chance? I can't tell in the pic.

either the keel or strake, and the ones that cause debate as to their relationship to the hull integrity as far as breach........some have kept them open, some have drilled more, and I plug mine, all of them

3/4" marine grade, gluvit, prime, paint, glue, carpet, all fastened with SS L brackets and screws at all 3 points of the bulkhead wall, side panel, and console sides.

Yah, looks like the keel plate to me. That hole is there to drain yur keel, no sweat on that.

You boys are wicked smart even with a bad picture. Looked it up and I think it is actually a strake. It is up from the keel plate on the port side. Now I have to figure out where the water was getting in since I was putting the water in from the top. Maybe Gluvit will take care of the problem. I only saw some slow drips when the boat was full as I was power washing it on Monday. Have any of you put Gluvit in with temps less than the recommended 71 degrees? I can get the garage up to a steady 63 with the outside temps at 25 degrees today. If I can't do it tomorrow then Thursday is going to be a warmer 38 outside so the garage may get in the high 60s.

Today was a busy one. Set up some tree stands for the elusive white tail, shot the bb gun and recurve bow with my two youngest, and did some sanding on the boat floor with the help of my oldest. Here are two shots of the fun we had on the boat.

I like it. Mind if I steal the idea?

......Otte...the two pics you just posted....in the second one...the drill with all the rivet remains on the drill bit....in the background I see your
boat ID plate riveted to the side rail...if it is readable...it might say/indicate year boat was built...:D

I think what you said reiterates what I have been saying, as well as what Starcraft Steve from the Factory discussed with me regarding hulls.

If you filled the hull, as you said, and water is seeping down into the strakes and out the drain hole, then in the current condition, putting the boat in the water fills the strakes, and enters the hull inside, and moreso underway.

The dilemma is two-fold. Strakes and the keel plate are thicker gauge than the main hull, and, holes are drilled into the hull to attach strakes and keelplate.

Several on here will disagree once again, and that is OK.

Any loose rivets need to be addressed. Even then, under pressure, the main hull is meant to flex and the heavier gauge strakes/keel remain solid and intact, causing breach in the voids, or the rivet channels.

This is NOT ADVICE, a mere suggestion.

I filled the strakes/keelplate with Silicone II(good for -40 below)

I sealed off the drain holes with JB/rivet combination

I used Gluvit on all exterior seams

I used Gluvit on all interior seams and rivets(common and standard)

We certainly don't disagree on tightening up any identifiably loose rivets. If I were you, I'd roll her out in the driveway, have the trailer fairly level, and fill it up with water to about the strakes. Mark any drippers you see on the outside and then address.

He said he did that, and water from inside the hull seeped into the strakes and out the drain hole of the strakes, I believe

Yep. I did fill it up and did not see any major drips. I few slow drips until I lower the boat after draining it and put it in the garage then I had a steady stream out the strake on the port side.

Okay today I tapped out a crease on the port side to look a bit better. Did another vacuum and wipe down of the boat to get ready for Gluvit tomorrow when the outside temps get up to 38 and maybe I can get the garage to nearly 70 degrees.

Pennies? I looks like someone actually scattered pennies through the bottom of the boat. I keep finding them and found yet one more wedged in the rear most rib drain hole. I got it unstuck but managed to push it into the rib in the process. I can't get at it and that concerns me.

Here is my serial number - 978762. An earlier search led me to believe it was a 1976-1978 boat. I tried a bit today and got no where.

I believe the side arrow trim ended in 1975

On the back starboard of your transom should be an ID plate starting with STR, then

the HIN number, the last 2 are the model year

hope that helps

No such plate on the transom. It does not look it ever had one there. Maybe the fact it does not have one helps date it?

Otte--

you're correct. HIN was a fed requirement that came in some time in 72. you DO recall the nationwide rash of tin boat thefts that pushed all the other news, vietnam etc, off the front pages?

before then, SC used to use a mfgr's plate on port side of hull, usually above splashwell on OB boats.

I was five in 1972 so that tin boat headliner is a bit fuzzy for me. It could be the 16+ concussions or even the Gluvit that has erased it from memory. I am glad that I do not live in the state of California as I am sure if I did I would have some sort of cancer after yesterday and today as one of the many products I have used has to be "known by the State of California to cause cancer." Between the Rustoleum adhesive remover and Gluvit today there were a variety of smells and chemicals in the air. The Rustoleum adhesive remover has a fine citrus smell but it gets a bet tangy after a few hours (pun intended). Gluvit is done! I made it with one small pot on the 16'.

I will start sanding on the outside on Saturday with the hopes of getting it done and maybe even get a coat of Rustoleum bare metal primer down. The family has voted - Rustoleum Regal Red from just under the trim up and on the gunwales with white going down to the keel. The inside color scheme (also in regal red and white) TBD.

I did not see the mfgr plate back in the splash. I bought the boat with aluminum rod holder add ons that were back there that may have usurped the plate position but I don't even see holes where it may be been.

Another interesting thing to note - not sure why it did not register when I took the outside 1/2" transom board off - is that I think that transom piece was original on my boat and not an add on later. The aluminum back there is bare with a penciled center line still back there. There does not appear to be sanding swirls that would indicate someone sanded before putting the back plate on so my guess it it was factory. Here are picture of the location of the back plate and my Serial # plate.
