Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

I gotta ask a question, wouldn't the sheets have more flotation than noodles with the hole in the center?

Yes, sheet foam would give you more, see:

But, pour in foam gives ya more than sheet foam....but it's not very popular. I didn't need to be popular.:D

My apologies to Otte. I didn't mean to hijack and get into a flotation discussion.

Back to the question you had - You don't need as much buoyancy as you figured. wood decks and transom float, gas floats and seats float. And a good part of the 1500 lb. payload is peeps and PFDs. I hope Michiganders float. What I'm saying is you don't need 3000 lbs of buoyancy.

Back to your regular programming.

Not a hijack.... let's call it a lively conversation. You guys make me smile good stuff for learning and funny. I call it a perfect classroom. Oh we float in Michigan. To many Brats and Pasties so we float really well.

You are prolly right but the white styro is more absorbent unfortunately.

jas, my 79 came with a rotten floor, busted in 20,000 pieces upon removal, and all the white styro was dry, and very light,
and very useable

weren't most of the "heavy waterlogged" restorations based on the spray-in craaaap?

Yah, both mine came with waterlogged Styrofoam as heavy as bricks.

I kinda think so long as the bow is high so the water can drain, all is good.

Both of mine also came with wet heavy blocks of white styro.

I could have/ should have used about 60% of mine but the back 40% was soaked with gas and oil so I pitched it. Maybe not the best move I have made in life.

whew - Kev, you are a glutton for punishment. How did your floor hold up the past 2 years? If I remember right you used exterior ply and painted it with floor paint. I like your boat and those side panels are very nice.

I was moving like a flu survivor today so progress was slow. I have not been that aqueous in a long time. For a 3 hour stretch on Thursday I could not decide which way to approach the porcelain throne, in forward or reverse. Friday I stopped leaking but felt like a wet noodle.

I put my new $65 Lowe's table saw together. Straight forward assembly but still took me 1.5 hours to put together. Can't wait to get cutting on some plywood for the floor and transom. I sanded and put the third coat of white on the bottom, pounded out a bend, sanded, primed bare spots and put first coat of white on the aluminum bow piece that holds the seats. One issue and a question come to the forefront today. There is a major hack job by a previous owner in the front section of the bow piece so I need to come up with a plan to correct or cover up. The question comes out of the the bend on the bow piece. Did any of you beef up the piece to avoid bends. I have 250-350 pound friends and I am concerned they could bend it like tin foil. Ideas or direction? Here are some pictures of today.

Cutting new ply, resin & glass matt..hopefully replicate the blue and white stripe with vinyl stuff for boats, or find a porch paint that will adhere to the glassed wood.Oh, and keeping itcovered during our monsoon rainy season too! lol

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

Hey Otte, what's wrong with the bow seat support other than it looks like the PO used a hammer and chisel to re-shape the opening. And it doesn't look very symmetrical anymore and kinda thin on the top You could use a chunk from the decking wood to put behind it (toward the bow) and made a nice cutout. Make it look better and put some strength back.

Note to Kev, didn't you see that yellow warning sticker? You know, the one that says ditch surfing can be dangerous to your health and cause equipment damage.

Nice progress Otte. Sorry I can't be of much help with the bow problem or have any input towards the foam.. But your Rusto paint job looks pretty nice!

Hammer and chisel? I thought it was more like an aluminum starved beaver hit the bow with a vengeance. I thought about putting some plywood back there and maybe behind the entire bow seat support or check into welding some additional aluminum back there to thicken it up. I will have to check on sheeting availability and if my nephew can weld some aluminum up for me.

thanks rheagler. The rusto job looks okay but I am limited to the rough surface of the hull bottom. I am using the thinned down paint approach for the interior and I will keep you posted.

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

I think EZ had some problems with the bow seat supports in his SS. I don't remember if he had a solution.
