Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

Otte - Not to be negative but wouldn't a circular saw be easier to cut sheets of ply than a table saw? This from a man who just made a 1 1/4 x 8" transom board from a 40 year old douglas fir 2 x 12 with my table saw, I almost killed the saw.

On the bow support - maybe add another sheet on the inside and clean up the opening or add some 1" flat stock 1/8 thick to the top edge and vertical supports.

On the foam - I have more time than money so cutting blue/pink board to fit is what I would do. I have use an electric knife on soft foam, I wonder if it would work on rigid foam?

Paint is looking great, I will be there soon, so show me how to do it right, mine has many war wounds and lots of dock rash. I want to see how a real expert does it.

Glad you on the tail end of the flu, been there done that. I felt like I had been run over by a semi for about 4 days.

Hey 64 - Thanks for the feedback. I am planning a combined approach with the table saw and my circular saw. And don't worry about being a Negative Nancy. Silent Sue is the one you have to watch... never know what she is thinking.

With the front bow piece it would be slick if my nephew could just put a patch to fit over top and weld it on. Then I would not have to look at the beaver damage and it would give it some strength back. I may end up putting plywood as backers for the sides just for my bubba friends. I have to keep that area open as seating for the family of six. That was the main reason my wife gave me the green light on the boat as we can fit the entire family.

If I had to do the bottom again I would spend a bit extra and use some actual filler primer. The problem was I did not plan ahead well enough and order some roll/brush on filler primer as no stores in GR carry the stuff on shelves. I did not want to spray it on due to expense and the over spray issues in the garage. I will be investing in some spray filler for first step of putting the relatively small area of red going on the boat hull from the rub rail to gunwale. The dark color will show more imperfections than white and it is more eye level so a few extra bucks to keep me from seeing what I should have done will be worth it.

Sorry you have felt the pain of the flu. I am missing morning church today because things ain't quite right yet. In fact, I am writing this while on the can. TMI? I am down to feeling like a half ton pick-up has run over me now.

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

I read pretty much all of HopesheFloats resto thread. I was laughing out loud while my wife looks at me and rolls her eyes. Man that boat turned out really nice. WARNING SPOILER ALERT: It was a tear jerker though with the boat going up for sale at the end. Did the boat ever sell? Did he get a new project? Did Lassie find Jimmy in the well? Stay tuned next week for the exciting conclusion on iboats.

Off to dream land and up in the morning for the fourth and final coat of white on the bottom. Next up.... red.

To late. Woke up the the notion of using oak flooring for the bunk sides. Cheaper than buying oak panels or plywood? Don't know yet as I need to consult with craigslist.

EDIT: Well I found a possibility for using wood flooring for bunks.... While on c-list I accidentally hit 'boats' and found this for $98,000 right here in G-Rap. http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/boa/2790222124.html I figure if I don't eat or sleep indoors for 2 years this one is mine. Then I will have a floating home with six people living on it. It won't move because it will be to expensive to start but I will feel fancy.

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

Okay - Here is a tough one. I found a boat on c-list for cheap. It looks like a SS 16', listed as a 1984 15'. 75 evinrude will turn over but won't start, hull is aluminum, but many good parts there... shoot the boat may be in better shape than mine was/is. They got it listed for $650 and if you count the transom caps, I need 2, the fishfinder and seats all which I need (just not sure I want that type or color seat), I come out a wash plus I have a trailer and a hull for the next restore. What do you guys think? I know some of you have gone this route or even thought it before I even got into starcraft boats.

Dont know if thre was a 15 ft SS...But if you can part her out or (I predict) be your next project why not.
The question is how far would that 650 go towards this boat for materials?

Pros - Another boat! Borrow parts from this boat to finish current project then put parts back on '84. Even if I come out a bit behind short term I will have second boat.

Cons - Another boat. Short term I come out about $300 behind and short term matters right now.

Told the guy my situation but also said if he gets stuck or lowers price to let me know.

Doggone logic.

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

Okay - Let's see if this $6.18/can primer filler can work its magic on the upper hull. Man, do I dislike masking and he smell of spray paint. I actually felt brain cells dying and was feeling more stupidier as the garage got filled with mist. Got so crazy I opened the garage door to air out. Glad I am rolling paint on the boat.

Masking a kinda straight line was tough. I should have asked how all you managed with your paint jobs. I hope it's close.

Here are some picture of the masking and primer. I had helpers tonight. Not pictured is my daughter who was helping with the masking too.

I think they masked before sniffing paint. LOL You're right, masking is a pain unless you do it every day. She's gonna be fine, Otte.

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

Cool you had the crew helpin ya:cool:

It was cool and we had fun without fighting(?).

First thin coat of red is on both sides. Pics below.

Mobsters - I got a question for you. I took the Starcraft plastic name plates off the back end of the boat. There are open rivet holes there where the plate was. I could just put pop rivets in to fill but if I wanted a smooth look (I am thinking future Starcraft stickers or jazzed up plate) is it possible to simply use JB Weld without a backer of some sort and just goop it in there and sand?

Yah, I'd go with ribbits in that spot. I'd think that JB might pop out without any kind of backer there.

That's the route I took...

You can see that my decals fit just around most of them. The ones that the decal actually had to go over I gently warmed up the decal and had it "stretch" neatly over the rivet:)

Thanks Jas. Good tip on the heat application too. I would not have thought of that but can see how that would really help. Sorry I missed your splash last week. That boat looked good with some snow in it.

Anything else you think I should consider as I gear up for the interior?
