Please Help. I have a beautiful seven year old Black Lab, Roxxi Blue. Typical of her breed, she is a food addict.
My question is what foods could cause her to become "gassy". And if folks here hold info regarding a gestation period that causes certain food stuffs fed to my lab to produce this noxious fumage, your experience or data will be highly regarded.

More specifically, say I present Roxxi some cheddar cheese cubes along with her normal diet, could this become a source of dog gas?

I do require your input ASAP as this coming weekend my inlaws will be visiting. And the extended weather for cast calls for rain, thus likely placing us all in our house.

Also, Roxxi is particularly fond of my Mother In Law, Roxxi preferring to hold close company with her.

Please Help as I value your opinions as to Roxxies dietary menu prior to my inlaws visit.

Pat :D

Re: My Black Labs Gas

I have no idea what NOT to give Roxxi, but I'll betcha there are a lot of guys who might offer you a handsome sum *if* the dog has the ability to distinguish a mother-in-law consistently.

:D

-dd-

(Disclaimer: I harbor absolutely NO ill feelings toward my in-laws---they are great and I could never do better. My comment is meant for entertainment purposes only---though it may be bad humor and in poor taste.)

Well, I would suspect that the diet would be reflective on how fond you are of your mother-in-law.

Just explain that the gas fumes are a sign of affection!

Bob

Re: My Black Labs Gas

Pat,

We have shared our home with dogs for years, and the breeds have been mixed, Boxer(pure), Rotty(pure), Miniature Manchester(pure), and Pit Bull(pure). The only dog that hasn't been gassy is the little Min. Manchester, Mr Bigglesworth. The other dogs have always had gas, but it varied a little depending on what they were fed. When they ate dry food only, they had less gas. Here are our findings:

Cheap Dry Food only: Produced the least amount of gas, and the puppy gas was the least offensive. The down side was that the food was not good for the dogs, their stools looked like piles of saw dust, and they didn't like the food. So, we summarily decided that as long as we had a dog that wanted to share our home, they would eat better than that, and they would never eat that crap again unless we were eating balogna.

Canned food: Our big puppies like the Prime Cuts and Prime Slices by Alpo. On it's own, not a big gas producer, and their stool look very, very healthy with these foods.

Canned and dry mixed: In order to give our Rotti's an adequate daily amount of sustenance, we found that it is easiest to mix some dry food in with the Prime Cuts/Slices (along with rice if we have some left over) plus the dry food helps clean their teeth. Kibbles and Bits/Chunks does not seem to affect her gas much, unless it makes it a little sharper smelling. Beneful seems to make her way more gassy, and I think it because of the vegetable matter in Beneful. The expensive dry foods with the amino acids and stuff (like Purina One, Iams, etc) have about the same affect as Beneful. The net result is that I have determined that the better your dogs diet, the more gassy they will be.

Mr Bigglesworth is a another matter. The only food he will eat is Pedigree's Little Champs, Beef and Cheese. This stuff smells just like cheap, off brand, nasty potted meat. He never passes wind, but his mouth smell like a sewer.

My advise is this: get a box of Gas-Ex and add one to each meal you feed your puppy (contact your vet first to make sure this won't harm your puppy's digestive process). Otherwise the farty little puppies are soemthing we dog lovers just have to live with. All things considered, it's a small price to pay for the companionship.

Re: My Black Labs Gas

well Pat you sorta answered your own question ... Just cut back on the table scraps or eliminate them for the visit - you may want to start before arrival tho.

If Dixxies normal kibble doesn't cause the toxic fumes .. then problem solved. If she's still popping champagne bottles .. then change her kibble.

Go pick up some 'treats' small biscuts and keep 'em close at hand if you're used to tossing her tid-bits of this and that.

chips, crackers, bread and the likes should be fine too.

I just got done watching my brothers Chocolate last night. He picked 'em up from a week long trip and boy! he was a force to be recond with when he got here... but after the first few days his guts calmed down.. didn't give 'em much table fare .. other than some potato skins, meat scraps and tossing the occasional chip to him.

gestation period @ 60-70 days for dogs.. she's pregnant?? ... if so you've got a completely different thing goin' those pups are turning her guts wild and you might just have to put up with the toxic fumes.

Huge thanks for all the info guys. Deal is that Roxxis diet is good, Fromm brand dry food and little other crap lest she steal it off the kids plate.

I need a "quick fix" diet that produces the noxious fumes. Kind of like a quick release type of affect.

Timing is important as I desire good results while inlaws are over, then symptoms subside after they leave:) :) :)

Re: My Black Labs Gas

i'm sorry, this is just too funny to take serious. i think if i had an 'indoor pet' that farted enough to make conversation, they would have to learn to turn on the bathroom fan & use the dam toilet :D

but since its a special occasion- inlaws visiting and all that, i'd say give them some buttermilk & boiled eggs along with no dry food, only canned cheapo stuff ;) just prepare the garage for them for a few days after the inlaws have been run off. lol

Sally used to cut them we first got her. She has a fan tale to boot. Kids watching tv on the floor got the worst of it. They kept blaming me until one day I was out of the room.

Can dog food. The more money you spend the sweeter the aroma. Switched to dry. problem solved.

Then momma felt sorry for poor Sally and bought some hickory smoked bacon snaks for dogs. A few days latter the dog was a walking bacon snak. The whole house reeked like a smoke house. It took three days after obstaining before sallys skin stopped emitting that foul smell.

Still cant do anything for her breath though..

Re: My Black Labs Gas

Pat,
There are some breeds that are just plain gassy. Labs are way on top of the list. The product Bean-o has some enzymatic substances that may help out, and the ingredients are harmless if nothing else. Use the regular adult dose. Also, the use of charcoal capsules have been known to be effective, and I'm pretty sure that you can buy these over the counter at any pharmacy. Just ask the pharmacist. Hope this helps.

Re: My Black Labs Gas

Yep, she does kinda "grin" dog style.

My intentions were to get her "gassy" before inlaws arrived, me my self enjoy the little show, then hope she returned to her normaly non-fowl self.

I recall a stunt like this in an "Overboard" cartoon. Captain Crow was telling the evil little pirate "Charlie" to be mindful that he was taking "Louie" the ships Lab to see "Cicellia", his love lust from the enemy Green ship. Next frame "Charlie" acknowledged he was aware of the Captains intentions, meanwhile feeding "Louie" the Lab chunks of cheese.

I thought it pretty funny, and recalling the 'toon while truck riding with Roxxi this past weekend would by funny for the following weekend, but for real, when inlaws are due over.

Probably will not execute this evil deed, but then, never know.

Re: My Black Labs Gas

Here's the REAL answer. This has worked on my dogs...
Elevate their dog food! If the food is on the ground, most dogs eat too quickly and ingest air which equals gas. Trust me it works.
Get creative and elevate the food to about shoulder height +/-.. Good luck!!!

For really good gas, raw steak. I know it's expensive, but the result will be worth it. :D :D :D
