I listed one of my boats for sale on CL last week. Today was looking at CL and noticed a boat for sale like mine 2 hours away. I clicked on the add listed by someone else and there was a picture I took of my boat. There was a phone number in the add I called and he said he needed the picture to sell the same boat for someone out of town, $5,000 less than I had mine listed for. I questioned him further and said I would flag the adds. Then he got mad and said some nasty things to me and hung up. This will hurt my add when I repost it. Hopefully this goes away and it dosen't happen to any members.

CL sucks in so many ways. You flag him and he flags you,,, so many scams too which is what he may be doing.

He was probably a scammer. Good for you for flagging him.

When posting pictures it is a good idea to put "watermarks" on the photo.
Some wording that would identify the photo to a particular listing or ownership.

People will do the strangest things. I guess once it's on the net, it's up for grabs, but that sure doesn't make it right. Maybe CL has a policy, I've never run into this kind of stuff before. Got any links?

Re: My boat pic on CL stolen

I had a 1984 26 foot wellcraft with no motor or a non-functioning one up for sale. I got a call from someone in South America saying he would pay full price plus shipping if I sent it down to him. He was going to pull the motor and put on out boards. I suspected it was someone just joking with me and never took him seriously. I told him I would only sell in person and cash in hand. He told me he was going to fly up to Canada and pick up the boat and arrange shipping out of Montreal. He even gave me updates as to where and when he was going to show. Funny, on the day he was to arrive I never heard from him again. To this day I can't figure out what his scam was, he kept on asking if he could pay with PayPal and if I would ship the boat?

the scam is that after you ship the boat the bank returns his certified check as counterfeit. Worse, if you are selling for $25,000 he give you a (fake) check for $30,000 and you give him $5000 in change.

Not meaning to hijack this thread but, my boat was up for 3k with a tri axel trailer. My ad was buy the trailer and get the boat for free. I agree about the cheque but in this case why would you even want a 26ft work in progress unless you were going to fix it up. I don't know how the PayPal scam work. When I get the money from PayPal it has cleared the bank? Worst case is I give him my boat for free and get the driveway back.

There are so many scams. In your situation the most likely one is that he sends you an email that looks like it is from Paypal, you click and try to login. He then empties your bank and credit card accounts using the userid password that you just tried - didn't care about the boat.

Unfortunately one flag isn't going to bring the ad down. Given half of this country alone are scammers, it's getting hard to discern them.

Which is too bad since craigslist is such a useful website. In my case, I just don't deal with any buyers who want something shipped or don't want to pay in person. eBay is the place for those transactions.

I must say that I was really surprised that when I listed my old boat a few weeks ago that I didn't get a single scammer contacting me, just folks with real questions and one really excited buyer.

Nice to have a good experience. Even when the people seem legit sop many never actually show up when they say they will. Last vehicle I sold, the family finally showed up to buy it for their kid and they proceeded to insult all Maple Grove dwellers as living on debt to justify why they lived in Brooklyn Park when they pulled up to the house. It was odd.

Delete your CL ad and post up another with a new photo w/watermark and you're good to go. I wouldn't worry about his ad.

Maple Grove must have changed since I lived there. I grew up in one of the first developments there, when it was nothing but affordable tract housing and corn fields.

Or post up a link to his ad and we can flag the crap out of it ;)

When I was shopping for 4 wheelers a few months back there was one particular nice looking 4 wheeler who's picture was being used all over the place in different ads and on ebay. Whosever it was customized it pretty uniquely. The price was always slightly too good to be true.

I wished it was still like that...they've filled in pretty much every corn field and horse farm in the years we've been here. There's ton's and ton's of nice houses now because Maple Grove is so expansion friendly. Our only saving grace is that we are on the Corcoran/Maple Grove border and Corcoran hasn't changed almost at all since MN became a state so very few non farm houses. The church up the street is from the 1800's which in MN terms is old.

I saw an ad on kijiji (Canadian CL), the ad was for an 1968 shelby mustang. The ad show this pristine condition car for 5k or best offer. The ad reported it was her late husband car and that she did not really know what the value of the car was. I think the scam was to take deposits on the car and of course never deliver. I guess the idea here is to take advantage of greed on both sides, seller and buyer.

Happy Easter. Maybe there is a boat like mine for sale and the person didn't have a picture. Seams strange they would leave their phone number and map in the CL add if it was a scam.

Too lazy to take the picture themselves. Just scoop the picture of a similar boat, no need to clean it up. They never even have to leave their keyboard, LOL.
