Re: My Boat Was Stolen Yesterday!! Caught On Tape

Glad it worked out for you. As a victim of boat theft myself I heard all the same accusations that were thrown at you. Many by my own insurance company.....

BoatUS was very reasonable, I was all geared up for a long fight, had already started my call log, documentation, etc., fully expected to have to file a bad faith lawsuit, but in the end they weren't bad at all. The only sticking point was when they asked me to sign a piece of paper giving them and any of their investigators full, liability free, rights to perform a background, credit check, and who knows what else check for 90 days.

I refused to sign the form, but they settled the claim anyway. I think it was just a boilerplate form that they probably would have made mandatory if they in any way thought the claim was fraudulent. It probably helped that the boat was paid for and it was not a multi-million dollar yacht. The AV for my boat they probably make every 10 minutes.

I wonder if the insurance company would give a discount for one of these?

Boat ins companies don't give you a discount for anything. On top of that, BoatUS dropped me, so in the end I will have to find another ins carrier in the future. Since BoatUS was the cheapest when I last shopped around, I have no doubt I will not only be paying a higher base premium, I will also be paying more since I had a claim in the last 7yrs.

I wouldn't even be surprised if this affects my car ins and homeowner's ins should I ever switch carriers. They use any excuse possible to raise your rates.

I do think tracking devices are the way to go, they are the one device that boat thieves probably never count on due to their rarity. It would have to be very well hidden though, since I'm sure they dismantle the stolen boats in a very short period of time, and it could be up to 12hrs before you notice the theft (due to work, family, etc). The problem with hiding it is the GPS antenna still needs a pretty clear line of sight to the nearest 3 satellites.

I wonder how much the fact that you didn't sign that document was in their decision to drop you.

On top of that, BoatUS dropped me,

thats the problem with insurance companies... They will gladly take your money for a lifetime, but if they ever have to give a little back, they want to hike up your rates or just drop you completely.... not much of an "insurance" company if they will only insure you once...

Just remember "Nationwide is on your side". If you don't believe me just listen to the "World's Greatest Spokeperson in the World".

Actually I have all my insurance through NW. Home, Auto and Boat. But then again I work for them.

Sure glad you got a decent settlemement that you are pleased with. It sucks that they dropped you though. Same thing happened to me with State Farm with car insurance. Had been with them for over 20 years and made a claim and got a ticket and they dropped me like a lead weight.

I had good luck with Nationwide. Filed a boat claim. They paid quickly and didn't raise my rates or drop me. Now when I filed on my homeowners policy(many years later) they did quickly raise my rates. Around the same claim money on both

I think it is all depends on the individuals that are covering your particular claim. I HAD Nationwide for a rental house of mine that was damaged due to a storm that knocked a huge tree over onto the roof. It took NW 2 months to settle. They fought me on every detail of the policy and only after threats of a lawsuit did I get any justice. They never return calls and my claims lady was a real ***** that was hardly ever available. They also dropped me after paying out only $6000. I have paid them twice that over the years and would have been better off just putting my monthly payment in a savings account or a shoebox for that matter. Nationwide was definitely not on my side! I have AllState on the home I live in and they have been fantastic on the 2 claims that I have had here. I am sure there are horror stories about AllState as well though.

Its actually in the fine print of the policy. In the event of a total loss your current policy will be automatically terminated once a settlement is completed. What remains to be seen is if the underwriter will approve a new policy in the future when I get another boat. At the very least I will lose my no claims discount. At worst I will have to find another (read more expensive) boat insurance provider.

Also, one other thing I did not agree with is that they are also entitled to your entire insurance premium. So in my case I paid for the year upfront, and had only used 4 months of the policy, but since I suffered a total loss, they have fine print stating they are entitled to the full premium. So the remaining 8 months of my premium money, despite the fact they are not covering me for the remaining 8 months they got to keep.

Even if I had been paying month to month, the fine print states they would have deducted the full premium amount from the settlement payout. I don't really see how that is legal since I only had 4 months of coverage and got charged for 12, but I guess since its in the fine print of the policy I signed, they are entitled to it.

Re: My Boat Was Stolen Yesterday!! Caught On Tape

1. What confuses me is that if the boat is gone, what would they be insuring?

2. Of course the policy is dropped. The form you were asked to sign just covers their behind on the investigation they will do anyway. How much "boat theft" is actually "asset conversion", from their point of view?

3. There are ways to track a cheap cell phone with GPS. Unlike the asset tracker above, there is some maintenance involved, but it works even better because you would have been able to have it call you as soon as the boat moved, and continually report it's location.

Actually, not that much of a problem. I've used, and have, a GPS tracker/logger. It's not one that will call you but it will log everywhere the vehicle has been using GPS. I hid it under a plastic (probably ABS) vehicle bumper, worked fine. I don't think you'd have much problem with fiberglass either.

Re: My Boat Was Stolen Yesterday!! Caught On Tape

I had a boat stolen once. When the police took the report the officer told me that they always get back the boats stolen on the water, but only get the trailer boats back after they have been stripped and dumped.

Mine was recovered three weeks later. The boat was stolen on a Sunday afternoon, and the guy tied it up in a marina that evening, telling nearby boaters he would be back in the morning to rent a slip. It took the marina owner three weeks to get mad enough to call the cops about his deadbeat boater. I didn't think I was ever going to see that boat again.

Enjoy your next boat.

Re: My Boat Was Stolen Yesterday!! Caught On Tape

I don't believe any insurance company is "on your side".

Nor mine or anyone else's, except their own. And I don't believe any of you believe it either.

Not gonna call them ALL crooks, but.......

I do a lot of my own fabricating. One of the first things I do with a trailer is build a removable hitch. Next size smaller square tubing, a hitch pin with cotter pin and an hour in the shop and I'm as theft proof as an ornery guard dog with a big bore lever gun.
If I'm in a high theft area I'll chain it down, too. Too many obstacles and most thieves will look for an easier target.

When I'm in home territory I don't sweat it at all. Everyone knows how ornery I am.... and also knows about my big bore lever gun ;)
