Hi everyone. I am getting ready to do my first project and I wanted to ask for advice/suggestions/moral support/past experience. I have pictures and a plan of attack. Please let me know what you guys think.

The boat was custom built in 2004 by a man that once worked for stauter boat works. If you are not from lower Alabama, you might not be familiar with these. It is a great flats boat and I am looking to restore it.

Plan #1:
The white rub rails have been scuffed pretty bad and they need repainting as well as rub rail caps. I am hoping to put the SS caps on but they are rather pricy. I am planning on sanding the rails down to bare wood. Then I will prime them with prekote primer ( 2 coats) and then 2-3 coats of polyurethane brightside paint.

For the wood that is varnished I am a little lost at what to do but here is what i came up with. The bow is teak or cyprus (I think), but everything else is plywood. I was planning on sanding everything down(not the deck), then using interprime sealer ( 2 coats) and then 5-6 coats of gold spar varnish.

Questions?
Do I need to treat the plywood(not the deck) differently than the wood on the bow?

Also, what grits would be appropriate(general guideline)?

Re: 16' wooden boat refinishing project

Re: 16' wooden boat refinishing project

Alright so here I stand. I have gotten a lot of the hard work knocked out.

http://s622.photobucket.com/albums/tt310/fox16/

-Im Thinking about changing the color from yellow to a green(more on the dark side).

-I am also not to sure how to fix the damage to the keel at the very front of the boat. I have zero experience with fiberglass, but with a little encouragement I would love to try.

-I'm not sure what kinda rub rails to put on her. I'm thinking the rope insert kind. I would to hear some ideas about what would look good and pricing.

-There is an area on the transom that is a little suspect, at the bottom edge of where the motor mounted. You might not be able to see it in the pictures. I will post closer-up pictures in about a month.

So far the project has been a blast. I started halfway through the summer. It has been on hold since the beginning of August. I'm at school away from home and I had no place to keep the boat. I will resume working over Christmas break, and probably not finish till next summer.

Thanks to all who wish to comment.

Re: my first boat project!

Fox16,
Nice looking boat and welcome to Iboats. I'm sure you will get all the hlp you need here. As for how to fiberglass. I suges you read some of the threads, they cover about everything you would ever want to know about the process. Good and Bad. Just do a search and you can read for hours.
As for rub rails, you can do a web search or just check here at Iboats in Boat part and accessories.
Good luck.
Have a great day.

Re: my first boat project!

Great project and good looking work.

I have done just a bit of fiber glassing and suggest you do a test piece before tackling the keel. Be sure the part you work on on the boat is ready for glass, good wood and sanded but it looks like you know about that.

I like the current colors.

Always liked rope rub rails on wooden boats. Just seems right.

Good luck and keep pics coming. Albert
