thank you the link works now and is very good. well its been and still is raining so no work being done. but a do know the hull is water tight after i covered all the holes in the transom i filled the boat up to the water line with water and not a leak in sight.

slight problem the stringers are made of 2x's im 99% sure that trey are factory installed because the floor looks factory and matches the rest of the boat i have a call in to the manufacturer to comfirm this. i understand marine plywood is the building standard but at the same time the manufacturer used 2x's for a reason what should i replace them with

You can use Douglas fir for the stringers that run the length of the boat or plywood laminated together. Your choice. Plywood would be stronger but in a small boat like that it probably doesn't matter. I think one reason builders use longer runs of Douglas fir is because its faster to lay down. Just make sure if you use plywood to seal it up until it no longer sucks up the resin (especially the ends), something many manufactures fail to do.

i have been to home depot and auto zone and all i found is 8 square feet peices of both fiberglass mat and cloth. as far as resin all i found is polyester resin and hardner. will these work for marine aplications and what is epoxy i couldnd find that at all

Hello all i have a question on my 74 caravelle barracuda IV i just replaced the front motor mount on the 165hp merc and noticed that the wood in the transom was rotten but only on the lower part by the drain port?? i don't have any way to pull the motor i would like to know if there is any one that can help me and tell me another way to do this and will that hurt the boat if i run it only on weekends this summer and in winter time do more work?? please let me know. i don't get on here much if some one could email me some info i would be gratefull..

The glass mat and cloth from HD Lowes Auto Zone are ok in a pinch if you need a little to fill in places..... I found WalMart is the cheepest for the 8 sq ft package.

The poly resin from them you DON'T want.....is has wax in it and you will have to sand between coats! If you like grinding fiberglass then use it.......NOT LOL

Go to www.uscomposites.com and order your csm mat,1708 biax and 435 standard poly resin. This will be the best way

Epoxy is sorta like Poly resin but MUCH more expensive. I'd highly recommend you use the Poly.

Dry 60+ degrees..... but then again I glassed mine in a tent with heaters at 35 degrees.....

wow man you are rite thats alot of info. is there a way i can stop my wooden stringers from ever rotting again. i dont understand how water got down there in the first place

Read my resto thread and you will see the drain/limber holes I added so if water ever gets under the deck it has a way to the bilge and gets pumped out.

Reasons why your stringers rotted
1 neglect.....letting the boat fill up with rain/snow
2 penetrations through the deck.... everything bolted/screwed to the deck has the potential to let water get below deck
3 poor glass work on the stringers from the factory.....they really don't care if it rots..... you'll need to buy another boat.

Thats just a few to start....

How to keep it from rotting again!

When you do you repairs you will add passages for water to escape
You'll do better glass work than the factory
All the screws the penetrate the deck will be coater with 3M 5200 sealer
YOU won't let water stand in the boat for long periods!

All so true with #3 being a biggy. I've been there had a foreman tell me once "Just glass it in, it'll last a year and that's all the warranty is for"

Use Clear packing tape and tape over them before you clamp the new transom in place. The Thickened resin you use to glue the transom to the outer skin will easily fill the holes.

Nothing special, just whatever you can find that will reach the depth of the transom. You don't need a lot of pressure, just enough to hold it true while it cures. Too many times people want to clamp it so hard they squeeze all the resin out.

Make sure you do a "dry run" on your clamping system, becuase you don't have time once the resin is mixed to mess around adjusting things. Have your material cut and clamps set and ready to go.

I like using these. You can make em for less than 10 bucks each or for nothing if you got scrap 2x4's and some long bolt laying around.
