Mrs. QC and I were away for the weekend. My 11YO and 13YO stayed with good friends while we were away. They were both at the same house, close friends of ours and theirs. Anyway, this family has a 4YO Brittany Spaniel. Seemingly nice dog etc. My whole family loves dogs and our 11YO (Brian) has been around Luke (the dog) since he was a pup.
We were in Chicago and I got a call Sunday night at Midnight CST (10:00 PM at home). Jeff (the dad) said "sorry to call so late, the dog just bit Brian, I think they were horsin' around, and he has a couple of puncture wounds on his cheek, jaw and neck :% , and I am going to take him to emergency. He's alright, but a couple of them are pretty deep and they better get looked at". Jeff sounded really bummed and mentioned that he would "club the dog when I get back." I asked him to relax, let's worry about the dog later, and we'll talk more after you get done at emergency. Sorry you're having to handle this while we're away etc.
Brian calls me an hour later and he got a total of seven stitches, on four separate spots. Nothing we can really do at this point, we were already scheduled to fly home the next morning.
So the wounds are all covered up by bandages and I haven't seen them. Nothing close to his mouth, so I don't think the scarring will be too bad. I interviewed Brian today as I wanted to make sure what role he played in it etc. He had two witnesses (daughter of friend and her friend who corroborate his story). Apparently Brian was walking into the kitchen and passed by Luke. Brian reached down slightly to pet him as he walked by. Luke jumped up and attached himself to Brian's jawbone. Upper teeth on the cheek and lower teeth into his neck. Brian said he felt his skin starting to separate from his face so he grabbed Luke's upper and lower jaw with each hand, pulled apart until he was free and threw him to the ground!!!! I'm pretty proud of the little guy for keeping his head screwed on straight 8) Anyway, from what I can tell Brian did absolutely nothing to provoke this, and the dog went temporarily nuts :^ Doctor said that the neck wound was pretty close to, well never mind that . . . let's just say he recommended we call if Brian had any difficulty breathing.
Before I heard the whole story I was pretty sure that Brian must've been rolling around on the ground with Luke or something and got nipped with a few quick snaps. Apparently that's not the case. I was thinking that the dog just screwed up, but I am taking a different view now. Jeff is taking the dog to his vet today to talk it all over. I am not sure what story Jeff knows as I just learned it myself, but if I heard this story as a bystander, I would recommend the dog be put down. Thoughts?
