Aww that sucks..

My first trip turned into a OH GEEEEZUS when I figured out I was overheating (from my bad impeller)
takes a lot of the initial enjoyment out of it all..

Glad ya got her back home and are on top of it.

Thanks, we know all about OH GEEEEZUS trips! We've already had three! I guess that comes with buying a 40 year old boat. Surprisingly I am really not that frustrated, I do feel like once this is fixed I should be good to go for a little while. Maybe I'll be able to stay on the water for a whole day!

Got the new manifold on and ran her for a bit this morning. Everything seemed good, the oil didn't turn milky and water was not gushing everywhere so hopefully we got this issue fixed. Gonna try and take her out tomorrow, I hope for more than ten minutes! I will post some more video's if we do.

Here are two from this morning.

Re: My new Starcraft Project

We did take her out yesterday on the Delaware Bay out of Cape May. The motor ran great and the oil looked perfect! Woohoo! We were actually able to stay out on the water for about 5 hours. The weather was perfect and the water was calm. We ran the motor pretty good. Didn't catch any fish though.

Unfortunately we did have an issue on the way back. The motor was running hot. Had to shut her down a few times to cool, I was watching the temp gauge making sure she didn't get into the red! I'm thinking the impeller took a crap. I bought the drive new last September and was told by a bunch of people that I would not have to change it until next season, should have gone with my gut!

Here are some video's of the trip, warning - you may get seasick watch them... It's tough to drive and film at the same time!

Hold the phone, you bought that drive new in Sept you are thinking the impeller is already burnt??? Am I such a green horn rookie to think that it should last a little longer than that!!!

Hey, she sure looks great up and running!

I completely agree, it should last longer! Again, this is just my guess, I haven't actually looked at anything yet.

Running an I/O or outboard dry for 5 seconds is long enough to cause damage to the water pump or impeller. 30 seconds and it's a safe bet the impeller is toast.

Jcup, did you run it dry at any point?? If yup than I'd say a burnt impeller would make sense. If nope I am still thinking you should have plenty of life there, eh!

No, never ran dry, not even for one second. The only thing I can think of is the drive and impeller sat for a year or two before being delivered. Other than that I have no idea.

Re: My new Starcraft Project

did you ever run it WOT on the hose? I have seen some guys blow the impeller beacuse the muffs are only meant to help you test fire the motor not go WOT the impeller dosn't get enough water.

Since your old manifold had cracks..It may have been corroded with gunk and rust chunks clogging you or restricting water flow..

Perhaps try to back flush?

I never ran it wide open or even near wide open, but I did run it fairly hard the day before on muffs to see if the oil would change. I guess that could have caused it.

That's a real good idea, never even crossed my mind.

Thanks guys for all the help!

Closer every day. I listened to the motor run to give me some hope.

With any luck you get the cooling issued squared away and then on to enjoying the boat.

Speaking of boat names, I'm thinking - Always Something - for the obvious reasons... It seems I can't quite get her done. Any other ideas?

JC keep bangin at it and it'll all come together eventually. At least you didn't blow the head on day two of a two week vacation at the lake:D

There's nothing more embarassing than being towed around the point by a rental pontoon boat and seeing your wife on the dock with a video camera:eek:
