Yep its theirs, they can do what they want, my peeve is my son. I offered to help him build a ridge pole set up so his old 19 ft Whaler could be tarped. The answer, ya ya I will get it done. There it sits full of snow, I drive by it every day on my way to work.

Their was a older starcraft chieftain that sat out on a river bank on its trailer for many years. I would stop about once a year and ask how much it has a locked up 85 Johnson on it and rotted floors and transom. The owner wanted 4000 for it. As time passed i watched the river bank erode with each flood season and one spring it was just gone. I did ask about and was told the river got it.

Re: My pet peeve about some boat owners

Im still trying to figure out the logic behind parking a $30k truck in the driveway so they can keep a $3k boat in the garage........lol

it's not logic but it's because the truck is made for outdoor use and the boat is not. Maybe the rant should be, why do people buy boats that require being covered? You and I know better....

However one reason to keep a boat in a garage is so you can keep it rigged and ready; you can lock up a truck and all its contents but not, practically speaking, an open boat. Otherwise....

Gee, The only damaging element to a boat is sun. It is damaging to the boat cover, seats, Biminis and other fabric and material items. it can also fade the motor decals and rugs. Fiberglass is not normally damaged by the sun. Also, an open boat in good condition is made to get wet inside and out. That will do no damage either.

Not sure what the issue is. On the center consoles here in NJ, we cover the consoles and seats over the winter and the rest is on it's own. My speedboat and Bowrider each get a full cover to keep the sun off the cushions and seats.

Down the road from me, the one marina has a 80's 22ft Sea Ray Pachanga with the cockpit cover 1/2 on for over a year, the rear bench back is wide open. So sad- may have just needed an engine? but now it would need an interior and probably a floor.

Things don't wear out, they are neglected/ abused.

Regarding covered or not, there are usually electrical components and wiring and other rigging to think about. Sure, components can be removed and maybe the wiring should be all tucked up somewhere but a wind driven rainstorm will drive water spray up under almost anything. Covering seems prudent not only for seating and flooring (if those are vulnerable in whatever type of boat) but also for the other elecrical and mechanical components and rigging that could last longer if kept dry.

On the flip side...my dad would tarp his boat over the winter with a homemade wood beam system made to withstand heavy snow load but would first disassemble as much of the interior upholstery as possible and bring it all indoors. Once the boat was parked at their cabin for the winter...it would not be seen again until spring since nobody ventures up there. The boat is now 30 years old and you would do a double take if you saw the upholstery...it is no kidding just like it was new. There is a generation or two that still believes things aren't disposable and a little bit of effort is a good thing. I think this does qualify as a pet peeve but not to the level of an annoyance.

Why would anybody want to leave either one outside?

As far as the dog,...

IMG_0030.JPGWow , didn't think I'd get so much feedback on this subject, but it's nice to see some people feel as I do. I'm always trying to keep my boat in tip- top shape and upgrading items as needed and keeping in it high & dry inside:D

The large number of responses reflects the wide variety of boaters--and they boats they own--who frequent this forum. I doubt there are any here who intentionally allow substantial damage to their boat from neglect or abuse. But just as there are people who keep their cars in a garage and those who part on the street, there are ranges of what people here do with their boats. You also have a wide range of conditions, some involving sun and heat, others snow and freezing; dry mountain air or humid salt air; many where weather is not really a factor.

And finally, you have a wide range of boats, from those that fall apart without extra care, to those that age gracefully with very little protection. In that respect, some boats left uncovered would be like leaving a convertible out in the weather with the top down; others no different than a sedan with the windows rolled up in a parking space.

The word "boat" standing alone has no meaning here; context is everything. That's why "outside uncovered" is a mortal sin to some and standard of care for others. Discussions heat up when one poster's assumptions don't match another's.

Wow! Look at that boat on the end degrading in the sun. Too bad he doesn't take care of his boat like the one next to him! :)

People probably think boats are supposed to be uncovered, or leaving them uncovered won't hurt them. At boat dealerships out here, I see many (if not all) boats sitting outside,,, uncovered and exposed to the elements 24x7.

I've looked at several of these boats (with the thought of deteriorating interiors due to sun rot) and could see that the carpet was getting hammered, sun bleached and dry rotting.

If I ever buy a new boat, it's not going to be one "off the lot", that's been baking in the sun for a year or two...

Warning, warning, possible hijacking in progress.

Instead of uncovered how about I don't see any bottom paint :D

and there's my point. This poster is concerned about "baking sun" but he is looking at boats in a parking lot in Las Vegas. he refers to "carpet" yet coastal boaters often don't have carpet, so that they can leave the boat uncovered. As do the dealers. And there are plenty of boats that are indeed "supposed to be uncovered, or leaving them uncovered won't hurt them" and, in my world, are the preferred boat to have. Boat? Whatsa boat?

Re: My pet peeve about some boat owners

I bought a used CC for a great deal because it was never covered and the seats were rotted, other neglected issues. I do not need to cover it now but I do since re-doing the interior. I use a canvass boat cover and a heavy duty tarp. It is a pain to put away, but stays dry, out of the sun, and it is clean when I go to the water. The thing most owners miss about leaving one in the rain is water entrapment. Hatch seals leak, deck seals leak, and even small cracks entrap water. Water will eventually end up in the foam, regardless. Even though mine has all of the drains/scuppers etc. it stays covered.......

Mac, and others, floatation foam in a boat that is sound will not get wet by rain, snow, sleet or lake, river or ocean water. The hull and deck sandwich them and are waterproof. Only if the boat is damaged, could the foam get wet.

You guys are nervous nellies!

decks don't leak if properly designed and maintained. My deck gets stripped and resealed every 3-4 years. Hardware should be removed and the bedding replaced very so often as well

Does the United States Navy garage their boats? I bet that takes a big building for an aircraft carrier, hmm?

No, they just have a liveaboard 24/7/365 maintenence crew and do multi-million dollar dry dock overhauls every now and then.... Not a real valid comparison.

Not much marine vinyl aboard, either, I would think.
